I picked up this MR DO cocktail yesterday from the head American Universal representative (from 1980 til ?). It actually blew my mind that this guy lives here in Parker Colorado. He had pictures, manuals and all kinds of back stories on Universal games.
This guy even told me an in-depth story on how HE named MR. DO's Castle.
Anyway, I had never seen a dedicated MR DO Cocktail before (other than one on the flyers).

He also threw in all 4 boards :)

That is awesome! Mr. Do! seems to be rising from the depths as of late. I'd love to hear more of this guy's stories. Post anything you feel you have time for, I sure would love to see more info....

...

Here were some interesting facts.

* He said that no one wanted the dedicated machines because if they broke down, they would have to order the parts from Japan @ inflated prices (he gave me the example of $500 per board).

* He told me the price of the MR DO's dedicated/new was $2995

* I think :( he said they only made 1000 dedicated uprights.

* He said only a little over 500 cocktails were made.

* He also stated that over 20,000 conversion kits were sold in the US the first year.

as I remember stuff, ill try to post :)

Very interesting. I love the history lessons...

More info (just remembered):

* He told me that MR DO'S CASTLE was gonna be called "The Knight and the Unicorn". Which was based on a knight killing unicorns with a hammer. He claims to have convinced the guys in Japan to make it a MR DO game. So they went with MR DO & the UNICORN (or something like that).
Anyway, he then said that it wasnt acceptable in the states to kill unicorns. So they changed the unicorns to 1 horned monsters.

@disjaukifa

So this guy was selling a Shadow Pinball machine on craigslist. When I went to his house to buy the game, he started talking to me about "early arcade days" and went to show me his cocktail, photographs and other misc items.
I realized pretty quickly that this guy really knew what he was talking about and seemed very passionate about it.

So 2 days ago I shot him a text asking him if he wanted to sell me the MR DO, and after a little persuading... I got it :)

That table is cool! I like how it has individual left and right speakers. Does it have 2 more on the other side too? Is the sound in stereo? (just kidding about the stereo sound :)) And care to share how much you picked that up for?

I actually nevered played Mr do before this year. I noticed my kids play it all the time my multicade so i finally checked it out and now i 'm addictied to it. Wish i had played it in the 80's. Great score.

I offered the guy $250 for the cocktail because he originally stated that it stopped working. But once he opened the top glass the game fired up.

He called me and said the least he would take was $300. So I figured it was worth it.

That dedicated price is ridiculous (for its day), no wonder they're sort of rare to see. I bet the kit was under a grand. I wonder what he'd have to say about the laser stuff they had planned after Super Don, sounds like they really expected it to take off and had more titles planned than any other manufacturer.
