I went to a taping of People's Court. Yeah, participants get flown out and who ever loses gets costs paid for by the show. It's "staged" in that respect, but the people on the show are still getting JUDGED, so they have some invested interest in how it turns out, unless they are completely souless. I think most producers will want people who care about which way the judgement goes because you'll get a better reaction.
Not to say that these shows are completely bunk. At least SOMETHING on TV these days talks about personal accountability and reasoning.
