So, today on Judge Judy, she was trying a case involving a Craigslist ad. Apparently, a couple listed some baby chickens for give away on Craigslist. A fellow called about the chickens, and they made arrangements for the fellow to drive there in the morning to take the free chickens. Overnight, the couple decided to keep the chickens, and did not attempt to notify the fellow who was coming to get them. The fellow drives 2 hours each way to get the chickens. He shows up, the people basically tell the guy to 'get bent'...so he sues them for breach of contract.

Judge Judy awards the guy $50 x 4 hours for travel time, plus $84 in fuel.

Would a non-tv judge do this? I'm sure a lot of us have been there/done that...arcade games rather than chickens.

Your thoughts?

Wow. That's awesome! Good for that guy. I hate CL flakes on both sides (shady sellers and crackhead buyers).

That is pretty cool.

I think a better question is, would it be worth it to bring in a non TV judge? At least on TV they get compensated for their appearence. Do they pay any fees, though?

I often wonder if those shows are staged, but Judge Judy seems to get real reactions out of people, not "I'm being paid to look angry" type reactions.

I knew a guy who was on the show, the cases are real but before you go out there they bring you all into a room and tell you to argue with her and put on a good show for TV. That's why every once in a while you see someone smiling when she yells at them, because they were told to act up...

There is such a thing as a verbal contract. I could see where someone could win. You spend time an money based on an oral agreement. I think what sealed the deal was no attempt on the sellers end to contact the buyer when seller changer their mind.

I was sued on Judge Joe about 8 or 9 years ago. I was told if I lost, that whatever the judgement was would be paid by the show. They also flew me and my girlfriend out to Hollywood, free hotel for two nights, free cab from airport to hotel, hotel to studio, studio to airport, and then flew us home. And $150.00 for being on the show. It was great!

But did you lose???

Some of the court shows actually look "staged". I like Judge Judy because, I think, it's mostly real.

I was just amazed that you could sue and win from being screwed on a Craigslist ad.

I once drove 2 hours to get 12 19-inch tv's to harvest for arcade monitors. I drove, the guy was not home. I called his cell, he said "Yeah...I'm out of town for a few weeks...sorry about that"...

I could have sued and won....(maybe)...

He threw it out and called her crazy. It was my oldest daughters' mother. We had a real messy break up and custody battle started before the child was even born. I actually got a lawyer and served HER with a paternity suit.

Our segment never got aired, though. I think it was because I went in treating this like an actual courtroom. I didn't mouth off, said yes your honor no your honor. Other than her bawling and insane demands, we probably weren't very entertaining. There was actually another case right before ours from St. Louis. They were going off on and interupting each other. They were on tv within a month of the taping.

I did get two tickets to a taping of Politically Incorrect when the girlfriend and I were at Mann's Chinese Theater and I ran into and got to have a conversation with Mark Mothersboro of DEVO.

I used to watch Judge Mills Lane. He didn't take crap from anybody either. They are both funny to watch but if I had a serious case, I would never go on a TV show.

After I re-read my post I wanted to clarify. The case I was involved in was just my ex trying to sue me for money she felt she was owed for hospital bills and buying a baby crib. However, I saved every little piece of paper that was relevant and went in there proving I gave her money all time and paid child support.

Flash forward to the present, my daughter has lived with me now full time for about four+ years and has gone from being two grades behind and damn near illiterate to being an honor roll student that loves to read and is in honors classes for most of her subjects, as well as playing the trumpet and violin pretty good. Haven't seen her mother since she tried to kidnap her about 3 years ago and has been moving from state to state with her husband. I've recieved exactly $20.00 in child support since my daughter came to live with me.

Off the topic, but I know for a fact that Jerry Springer's show is staged/scripted. When I was in High School, one of the girls in my drama class submitted her story for the Jerry show. I don't remember the specifics, but she got a script sent to her and we all read through it in drama class. But, you don't really need proof like that to know it was fake. When there is only ONE chair on the stage and they announce that they are bringing someone out, there is no place for them to sit down, so guess what's coming next.....Fight...Fight...Fight!!!

I've been to a couple of Jerry tapings here in Connecticut, and I've asked him if the show is real, and he swears it is. I think most of the stories on htere these days are legit, but they ask the guests to act it up for the television.

In the real world, you have to pay to file, which depending on where you live probably would cost more than you would win. That is separate than the court costs, which you could end up paying as well.

When I was in school, some of my friends knew these two girls who were lesbians. They called the Jerry Springer show, and the producers paid them to fly to wherever it was to film the show. Basically, when they got there, the producers told them to act like they were cheating on each other and start a fight. They went into the audience that had shown up to the taping and hired a HUGE black lady to act like she was cheating with the one girl. So when they show started, the first girl came out, then the second girl came out with her 'girlfriend' who was this huge black woman out of the audience.

The whole thing was made up for t.v. They still play that show every once in a while.
