OK, I thought about doing repro duramold williams cabinets and it hit me... I dont want to de-value the originals which are damn near impossible to find. I dont want people, not anyone here, but others out there to try to pass them off as originals.

I spoke to a local buddy and he was intrigued. What about a duramold style cabaret cabinet? The material would be formed ABS plastic in .125 and would be bullet proof. I would make sure it was ready to accept a 19" monitor and would have coin doors like the original and also the main kicker:

Where the name williams was on the original, I would make this part of the mold modular so I could swap in different names such as: Midway, Nintendo, Atari, Taito, SNK, or neo geo, Sega, etc... The possbilities are endless. Also I would be offerig them in both white and black ABS. The white can be painted to match anything.

The main huge deal is this. Shipping.. These could be sent fed ex and they would cost almost a pittance to ship.. Very light weight.

I am going to do a metal mock up for the molds and see where we are. I know people will want plastic already in certain colors but the truth is that each color costs $3000 to get custom run unless it is white or black.. those are industry standards.

So the question is this: Would you be interested in a duramold Mini/Cabaret?

Ideas and thoughts also welcome!

absolutely. I am going to make one and it will be done as a Bubbles for my buddys wife. Her Fav Game... when you make one, you make 2 or 3.. I am thinking of doing an Atari as the third one... in red... so I can make it look like a stick of Dynamite for a custom Agent X cabinet.

If I were buying one, I'd be a lot more interested in a full size reproduction of the original cabinet. I see people doing one of three things with it - multi-Williams, MAME/multigame cabinet, or replica of an original duramold game (Bubbles, Blaster, etc..)

The mini cabinet is an awesome idea, but I don't think you'll get as much interest as you would with a full size.

For me the bit question is: what's the total cost going to end up being? I mean, if FedEx will ship for some reasonable rate (I see low weight being good, but it's still gonna be bulky), there's still the tooling costs, etc. How cheap do you think you can make them? Assuming, of course, that you make a fair number, all in one color of plastic (either white or black). Any ballpark estimates?

I have been making molds for years and I have a way to make things amazing and cheap while still producing the best quality products. Tooling is not going to be that much at all. I am thinking about the 350 to 400 range.. Seriously.

I know people want full size and if we go that route, then I am going to insist on watermarking the cabinet. This will entail adding a formed in area you cant see on the outside that says PF Repro 2011. This is non negotiable. I wont allow them out unless this is done. That is why I suggested minis... 19" minis. I have looked at the cab in pics and I can see it may not be possible to do a mini with a 19' monitor. So, it may have to be a full sized cab.

I agree totally with watermarking - you don't want anyone passing off your repros as the real deal. My worry with the cabaret is that the CP will be too small for general use - I'm thinking of getting a cabaret wired for JAMMA, but I'd like to put 2 sticks on it (for TETRIS, for instance), but I think with that cab style, that's just not workable. Thoughts?

Totally agree... I might have to offer both then. Full and cabaret. I can see minis for making custom classic things and for people limited on space... But for a multiple mame or something like that, it needs to be full sized.

Ok, I will speak to my man and it looks like we will be doing 2 mock ups then. :O)

I hesitate to ask (because I don't have the money right now!) but do you have an idea of when this might happen? By summer, perhaps? Or fall? If I'm going in on one of these (not assured yet, but I'd like to), I'm going to need to be saving my pennies, and I just want to get some kind of time horizon to work toward.

Thanks!

I don't have problem with them being watermarked. Personally, I don't see that it would devalue the current crop of Duramolds any more than the repro cabinets that DTPWiz makes devalue the wooden cabinets.

That being said, I would probably be interested in a full sized reproduction. Depending on the quality and price.

I am interested in a black one (Duramold) if you do this.
please add me to any list you are compiling!

I would be interested in a full size one but like others I would have to see the quality and how it turns out,and if it would be an exact match inside and out to the origonal.Watermark no big deal to me.

As one of the 'space strapped' individuals, a mini/cabaret is just what the doctor ordered. I really would like something for my 'mancave', now that I'll have all the room selling my gaming books and dice collection will give me to maybe put something. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of quality these things turn out to be.
