How do you go about insuring your collections? I'm specifically trying to get my Qbert prototype insured for far more than that of a regular qbert.

What services do you guys use to get actual value?

That's an interesting question, I reading an article recently that was talking about getting proof about your personal property so in the event of destruction you have some documented proof of what you owned. The article was specifically focusing on folks on the east coast trying to make claims on lost items.

I have an old corvette and I had the insurance company do an appraised value and then insured it for the appraised value price.

We are in the process (new years goal) of getting organized and documenting and inventorying the valuable items we own. State Farm has an online app to do just that so we are looking at that as well as having some video evidence stored off site or in the cloud.

This may not help you, but I met with my insurance agent about my own collection and he told me to just do it under my home owners insurance. He said it is just a $money$ sum no matter what way you look at it. If the games are destroyed, you get "X" dollars. They will not replace any games. So, he said just take pictures of every game verifying what it is that you have, adjust your insurance pool accordingly, and if you get in a wreck while transporting a game your story should be that you are just adding/subtracting from your personal collection. DO NOT tell them you make any money off of games or it becomes a business transaction and is not covered by traditional homeowners insurance. Hope that helps buddy.

Since I rent I do it under my renters insurance. You give them the value of each room in the house. So put in how much you think your proto is worth with the rest of the stuff in the room for a total value of that room. Of course you would go ahead and total up every room in the house so they can figure out what the monthly payment would be and the grand total you would get if anything were to happen.

Im looking for insurance.. I have about 20k worth of games down in my basement. If my house burned down all the way I just get a big check but
if my basement floods or a fire burns up only the games.. I get 2500 for a "Collection". Basically crap.. My insurance company wouldnt cover them
for anymore no matter what I requested. They would even offer a rider.

They have collectables insurance you can buy from speciality insurers
that covers the collection. I'm still looking for a decent one to work with.

My insurance company told me not to classify my Transformers as a collection. But as toys and entertainment. As there is no cap on that classification. I'm with Allstate. I wonder if you can put arcades under toys and entertainment. Also I do a monthly video of my entire home and store it off site.

At the time i had my games, they were insured under two different classifications on my insurance policy.

All "restored/collection" games in my basement were on a seperate rider policy and required extensive pictures of each, and every receipt for parts/services performed. My personal labor was given a minimal value per game and if i had no receipt for the games initial purchase, tough shit, we're gving you credit for what you can prove. It was also made very clear to me that no appreciation differential would be offered in the event of future loss due to the "unique" request for insurance.

All project games in the garage were classified as "personal property" only and fell under the "umbrella" policy associated with other posessions in the household. There's a certain dollar figure the insurance company pays under the umbrella and that's all the protection you're gonna get. They have no interest in your "stated value" piles of crap unless you have some documentation to prove value otherwise.
