Installing an NES Zapper on a Playchoice 10 Countertop

I recently obtained a Playchoice 10 countertop unit. Its a lot of fun, but I decided it would be even more fun with a zapper. While there are guides to add a zapper to other playchoice cabinets, there wasn't one out there to do the modification on a Countertop unit.

The countertop unit's harness lacks the wiring for a lightgun, however it can easily be soldered to the FCC interface board on the backside of the edge connector. For ease of quick connect, I decided to use a controller port from an NES. The only thing left for my modification is to make a permanent wire solution for the zapper itself, and to mount a holster on the left hand side of the cabinet.

Parts Required:
NES Controller port (I removed mine from a dead NES)
NES Zapper
Soldering iron
Desoldering Tool

Step 1 - Desolder and remove the transistor from the zapper gun sense PCB [picture 1]

Step 2 - Bridge the transistor solder points B and C as shown [picture 2]

Step 3 - Modify the Countertop FCC (interface) board as shown [picture 3]
*Brown to pin V - GND
*White to pin R - +5v
*Blue to pin P - Hit
*Purple to N - Trigger

Step 4 - Hook it all up and start shootin! [picture 4]

Happy gaming!!!

Very nice. Seems pretty simple. Maybe I am going to have to grab myself a copy of Hogans Alley or Duck Hunt and try this out.
How long did it take you to do?

Start to finish about 2 hours.

That included me researching how to modify my zapper, digging up playchoice pinouts and cross referencing them against the PCB. Once I mapped everything out, it was pretty simple to wire together.

Wow that is neat / I need that board the FCC / or filter board to have a project . my countertop is missing the 2nd controller as well , please if anyone has a extra working filter board I'd love to buy or trade !

ok. making progress :)

picked up an NES Zapper locally.
need to find the NES controller port. hmmmm....

This worked perfectly. I just finished playing Duck Hunt on my PlayChoice countertop. So awesome! Thanks for sharing this tutorial. I may follow up with a small tutorial of my own as I did some things a little different but still got the same results.

Thanks again!
