Well I have started rehabilitating the Comet I recently purchased. As part of the rehabilitation I needed to replace 2 of the displays. The player 4 display was cracked (just the glass display) and the player 3 would start to fade after about 45 minutes. I was originally going to just replace these, but after looking around it was apparent that it was going to be a fairly expensive proposition, so I started looking for alternatives.
After some research, I found out that there were two models of Comet displays. The early ones had card edge connectors and the later ones used headers to connect to the CPU board. There are at least 3 different options for LED displays for early Comets (PinLed, PinScore and RottenDog) and only 1 that I could find for the later models (PinScore). Of course, I have a later version Comet.
After some searching, I found that Marco had the PS-10749P set for the new Comets in stock. I ordered the set last week and they showed up today. The ads were correct, it was very easy to replace.
All I needed to do was replace the old display card
With the new one:
Not much difference.
Then remove the old displays and install the new PinScore displays. They just plug in and attach to the old screw mounts.
It only took about 30 minutes to go from old to new.
All that was left was to put the backglass on and fire it up.
The top of the player 3 and player 4 displays were being partially hidden by the foam light blockers that came in the kit. I am still deciding whether to leave them on or let them go naked. After that picture was taken I adjusted the foam and the displays are fully visible.
Now I just need to figure out what is going on with the flasher bulbs behind the lower fireworks display. They should be off and only flash during the the fireworks display, but they were burned out, so I replaced them with new ones and they were locked on, so I am guessing I have a transistor or two to replace on the motherboard.
Next up is the rubber ring kit I ordered at the same time....

Edit: if anyone is interested in the old display parts, they are on eBay right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160985635231 (listed 3/4/13 ending 3/9/13).
