initial d version 3 help

so I have an initial d 3 and finally obtained toslink couplers for it. one side powers on when hooked up together and the other does not. the working unit goes to a black screen saying checking network now and wont go any further. any ideas? Id love to get this up and running so any help is appreciated.

Got one here at our store. I dunno if i just got lucky cuz i know nothing about the game, but if yours has the card readers in the middle of the 2 games i opened both and slid out then shut and it goes past the network screen everytime after that.
