Inferno #2 - To Hell and Back

Bonkers. Looks to be serial number 50. That would make it the PCB from the very last dedicated Inferno cab. Crazy. It's cool to see all the photos and the evolution of this PCB from the Joust 2 one. It's a simplified design. Less jumpers.

Can't afford that right now though.

I guess my Inferno will have to survive on a Joust 2 conversion PCB.

The last pins on the control panel harness are done! No more alligator clips! And Inferno is in the arcade!

As soon as the new control panel overlay arrives, I'll install it, but for now, it's 100% functional. And very pretty. I think this might be my nicest restoration... So far.

So, as is typical, I made some noob mistakes and I'm just gonna have to live with the consequences.

The good news is that the CPO (and plate) are installed! The bad news is I've never countersunk anything before, and I didn't do a good enough job (despite going through two drill bits on the stainless steel plate....). So there are VERY noticeable bubbles on the CPO. Oh well. Nothing I can do about it now.

Maybe I'll buy another CPO and deal with it later. But for now, pending the proper sticks, this thing is done!

It's hard to see because these repro buttons aren't that translucent, but I did end up lighting the buttons just for funsies.

Don't forget to paint the inner edge of plywood around those joysticks black. That should've been done before the CPO, but can still easily be done after as long as you remove the controls and put masking tape over the hole on the CPO side and paint it from below.

When the proper joysticks are in place, there should be foam in that gap.... But I'll add that to my pile of mistakes on this build lol.

Here are some before and after shots, to this point.

Glad to have it in the lineup. I'll probably revisit that CPO when I get the joysticks for it...
Other than that. If anyone ever finds PCB Sn#02, I'll happily buy that! lol.

Been really focused on I Robot today, but this showed up in the mail today also:

All original Blaster stick. I was really hoping I'd be able to track down a pair of original grips at least for inferno. The rest of the joystick... Repro is fine by me.

One down... One to go. Anyone got one? Shell or more?
😅

If you need any scans a buddy of mine scanned all the parts of my joystick

Sourced an original manual and schematic set to go with the machine.

I know the inferno manual has been scanned before, but I found the schematics package to be basically illegible. So I scanned it again.

I don't have a professional scanner (I used my phone) but it at least should be a bit clearer. Put it on the Inferno page on VAPS.

Unfortunately, no. I have prior commitments that weekend here on the East Coast!
This...

☹️

Too bad there wasn't anything going on down in the southwest back in March...

I seem to remember hearing that there used to be a real fun event down there...

I heard there was a couple cool dudes that put on one hell of a bash last year...

For some reason I haint heard anything definitive as to why they didn't throw such a cool party this year...

D

Yes, this copy does look better than the one I have. I ended up also printing out the schematics for Turkey Shoot which were more legible and I think pretty close to Inferno's.

I'll print up this new copy for sure.

Thanks.

p.s. Which of you might actually be attending CAX then? My upright will be there as always, and just wait until you try the joysticks now with the new rubber outer sleeves I installed about a month ago. They made a HUGE difference versus the original sleeves that were quite worn out due to age. Also finally installed a switch so that the upper button for the player 2 stick would be functional. For whatever reason, this switch was never present in the player 2 stick on my machine. Thanks to Braedel for the switch!

Came across an interesting Inferno Glitch I hadn't hit before and figured I'd post it here.

My wife and I were playing the other night, and during the inferno wave, she killed most of the imps and then died. As I was still alive, the level cleared, and despite her being out of lives, she got enough points to get an extra life, after the machine had already asked her if she wanted to continue.

Apparently, this is sufficient to completely break it and the game reset after a very hopeful pause. Haha. Sucked because that was a good run too!

Definitely goes to show this is one of the areas where Inferno really didn't get all that polish that most of the other WMS games got :)
