Infamous Troublemakers

What games have a reputation for being difficult to keep up? Just from this forum you get the impression that Pole Position is on such a list. Not a problem as it's a game I never want to play again or collect.

Spy Hunter on the other hand… I've had a few locals KLOVers tell me it's a maintenance nightmare. Something to do with sound boards issues.

Any others?

My Spy Hunter has been solid once it was fixed up. The pattern I've noticed is that they can be a pain to get running because of all the boards and cables but things seem to stay okay once you get it that way. The only failure I've had on mine in 3.5 years (once it was fixed up) has been the gas pedal pot.

Whereas my BattleZone has had 2 board problems and 2 separate incidents where the sticks have cracked.

I've had more issues with my supposedly reliable Gauntlet Legends and MAME setup than with Spy Hunter.

A better question would be "What is the most troublesome component?"

Taito power supplies.
Gottlieb power supplies.
Vector monitors.
Cinematronics CPU boards.

Why is it that the games that I want the most are in the top 10? Q*bert, Spy Hunter, Tempest…

I don't think Spy Hunter belongs in the top 10... get it working and it'll likely stay working.

Any game that uses a card rack for the PCBs, such as Gorf and Star Trek. It makes the PCBs really hard to work on. Its very difficult to trace voltages or signals when the boards are crammed that close together.
