In today's paper: a comic featuring Space Invaders

I think they are trying to say that the mobile sales program will not pan out just like the Space Invaders game didn't pan out when they put it in the shop. Instead, it is relegated to the basement where it only sees limited use by the owner who has too much invested in it to ever recoup his investment.

Not totally accurate as Space Invaders was a huge hit and sucked in the quarters. Perhaps they purchased the game after the craze. I don't know. I haven't read Funky Winkerbean in 15 years.

I was thinking that the one guy was talking about some new-fangled tech program, but the old guy didn't have a clue about it and went back to the comfort of his "old-school" technology....

Another interpretation would be the owner has been trying to sell the Space Invaders for 2k on Craigslist for a year and that the mobile sales program is not going to pan out in the same way.

Following day's strip is probably something like, "This Mobile Sales Program isn't pulling anyone in. We may need to rip the insides of these phones out and install a pez dispenser instead. Everyone loves Pez that looks like a phone."

"I think you're right, Funky"

Twaddles down stairs

60-in-1 PCB in one hand, drill with a 1-1/8 drill bit in the other...blank, dull, empty stare at the Space Invaders.
