In need of the proper material, to finish Sys 1 Bezels

I was in the works with a pal on reproducing the system 1 bezel. Well currently I have a template for cutting them out, but I cannot find the proper material. Ive looked here and there but just not sure the proper name of the stuff Im after.

Initially my friend said it was called black oil board. I have been unable to find the size I need anywhere. I need sheets 3' x 4' (I think) Ill have to recheck that size but at the moment that is irrelevant if I cannot find the proper stuff.

This is the same material used in so many Atari bezels, sys 1, sys 2, millipede, stuff like that. If anyone knows of a source, or even just the name of a very close or identical match to this carboard stuff, let me know.

Id like to get these things off the ground, and make a few more machines look that much nicer. Its one of the final pieces left for all these sys 1 repros ive seen done.

I would be very intersted in one. I cut down a standard plastic bezel, but it just does not look as nice...

Yes, after looking around mat board seems to be the hookup. Ill have to enquire about thicknesses and textures and see what I come up with. Ill probably get around to this after the weekend, wish me luck.

if you get this done I'd be interested in 3 of them

Resurrecting an old thread.

I tried the matboard that I linked to in a previous post and it worked great, after some changes.

It's *much* thicker than the original bezel, so it's a lot more sturdy. I disconnected the flap from the old bezel, laid it on the matboard (be sure it's on the right side!), traced it, and carefully cut it out with a mat cutting knife.

You'll need to readjust the knife to cut halfway through the board in the areas where it's supposed to fold. After that, glue it together and you're almost done.

It has a very dark, matte surface, while the original Atari bezel is glossy. I just used some gloss polyurethane spray and put an even coating on the surface. After it dried, it was pretty much an exact match to the original.

I tried this with some Matte board with a white core (thats all they had on hand). They did turn out fine, but I ran into a little snag. Even after adding the relief cuts on the back of the folds, all of the folds had a wavy warped texture on the front of the fold. Even with a mini-brake, there were still wavy folds happening.

Once its in the machine, its hard to see. I also used a non-glossy board, and after looking at it, it almost seems nicer that way. It takes in the light instead of reflecting it back at you. Sure its not how they were originally, but as stated above you can just spray clear over the top.

Only problem I can see with these is shipping them. I dont know if I have enough cardboard sheets that big to ship with.

I figured a price of $25 shipped, but havent even gotten a quote on shipping yet.
