How important is side art on a game?

I like nice side art, but its more important that the machine be fully functional and then if its feasible, I worry about the side art. Some machines like Starship 1, Missile Command, Joust, Space Invaders, and Sinistar have really nice side art that adds a lot to the game. For the most part I like to leave it alone unless its in really bad shape. That way the machine looks like its as old as it really is and is more original.

Side-art is great when you can spread out all of your arcades and "enjoy" the art. if you are short on space, cramming your arcades together is your only option (side-art not so important).

I find sideart to be highly important. I see these machines as exceptional works of modern pop art and the sideart is a big part of that.

But I can see the point of having them close together...

Need I say more? Yes. RM, your avatar is very sweet.

I always replace the side art if available it just adds that little bit of niceness to any game. some of my game are side by side where you cant see it anyway though.

What's the deal with restoring games?

Growing up I remember all the pac mans, mr. do's pole positions, etc. all in ratty condition at the arcades! The games in my basement, which are completely unrestored, are actually EXACTLY as I remember them!

If it has side art, great! If the art is torn up, oh well. If it's missing I'll slide it between two other games or just won't worry about it.

of course i wish all of my games were mint with original details but honestly i only see the front of most of my games once im done with them. buy em cheap make em as clean and original as i can and enjoy!

side art is nice, but really.. who cares??? ALl you have to really worry about is the games on the ends of a row...

WHo becides you would notice anyways?

The clssic games that were painted, well decorated the artwork is VERY important as a work of art. it's part of the complete package.

I totally agree that the artwork matters a great deal. If it is silkscreened or painted directly on, I would be inclined to leave it alone and would shy away from a machine that had too much cabinet scraping. If it is decaled then maybe I could handle refinishing it, like the Punch-out!! I have with curling side art.

I'm one of those guys that is trying really really hard not to overfill my basement, because I want all of the games sides exposed in order to allow others to fully appreciate the works of art the machines are.

Pretty damn important to me...

A few scratches or tears is fine, but not a huge piece missing or torn off... If there is no side art, I'll make something.
