Image Max Size (and vs. page load speed) - and what should max forum image sizes be?

I was able to upload images until recently so something must have changed. If we weren't automatically resizing the images then maybe that can be implemented? The answer shouldn't be that we have to move them to a computer to resize them first.

I don't think mclemore had changed anything lately. Chances are your previous images were right on the cusp of hitting the size limit.

This was done to prevent crazy sized pictures from being uploaded and bogging the forums down. The best thing you can do is either drop the resolution on your phone when taking pics for klov or use an app to resize them before uploading.

That's freaking annoying.

The max size should be set to whatever the default iphone image size is.

Whatever happened to the auto-resize feature? We really need that back!

Jezus, fu*k forcing me to resize my pics before upload better not be a solution, permanent or otherwise. Seriously, it used to resize them automatically for me (or so I thought anyway).

It's not like I'm a super contributor/poster here or anything but I'll basically completely stop posting any content if I have to waste my life resizing pics manually.

what is the max image size now anyway? 6MB?
That should be able to support 1600x1200 images (x24-bit color) which is plenty enough.

I think we should push for a server side image cruncher. Simple to implement and eliminates user pain while saving server space/bandwidth.

@DonPanetta. I swear this used to exist. But it could been in the prehistoric Before Times. Before…Xenforo came among us.

Yes, I suppose that could be. Apple changes things all the time. It could be that a recent update caused the images to be larger. Either higher resolution or larger file size. It does seem I'm not the only one having this issue.

Yes. 6 megabytes.

I've seen the lack of this kill traffic on other "small" enthusiast sites.
Yeah. Me too. 🤕

Respectfully, i don't see this.

🤷🏿‍♂️

I'm not saying I am for or against increasing the size limit, all I'm saying is that there's never going to be a size that will satisfy everyone.

For what it's worth, here's an example of an image that fails to work. It's way below 6MB.

Posting and including images in this day and age should not be onerous. Somewhere in amongst all the posts and pictures will be a small percentage of great snippets of information that help people in the future. Given phones have taken over from cameras for everyday pics and quick checking of forum posts it needs to be supported as the way of posting.

I would suggest, like others have, set a limit and have anything larger resized. That limit can be reviewed and adjusted as technology and forum server resources change over time.

Actually if we look at the top post we can see that I wasn't imagining this. It was reported that the auto resize was implemented. I swear something changed recently that broke this. Maybe a month ago or so.

UPDATE 5/29/2024:

For the past year or more, we've set the max image & attachment size at 6MB on the forums, with a max of 10 images per post (previous to that it was 5), and each image could have dimensions up to 20,000 pixels in any direction (thumbnails are at 150 pixels are largest size).

Today I changed max image dimensions to 2000 in any direction. Anything larger than that will get auto-resized. It might make sense to reduce this further (to something like 1000, 1080, 1200, 1280, or 1600), but let's test a bit with 2000 first.

Incorrect wording. Resizing the image to fit your screen and changing the resolution are two different things.

Heif is just the internal format. It gets converted as part of the upload process.

I don't think so. Not reliably. That's why I switched my iPhone to use JPEG by default. (Or did you mean "upload to my PC using iTunes"? Because I don't/can't use iTunes.)

It could have changed since I switched. But if I just copied the .heif to my PC desktop in explorer, it seemed to only occasionally work, IIRC. But I could never figure out what made it work or not work. So I caved and changed my phone settings. But I won't change the default photo resolution. That's stupid.

Interesting. That could very well be my issue. Heif is the default format on iPhones so it would be nice if the format would be supported even if it was just converted to jpeg during the upload. Automatically down sizing the resolution could be done in the same step. ImageMagick can do this conversion and is incredibly efficient. I assume most people interact with the site on their phones, so both of these enhancements would be useful.

For what it's worth, I can upload these pictures to my media folder in the site in full resolution. I wonder why the resolution and format works there 🤔.

Ok, so it seems the media upload does do the conversion. It shows the file name as jpeg even though it's the exact same image that I tried to attach to a posting. The thumbnail didn't render, however.

HEIF is not a universal format because of patent issues. The open source AV1 implementation is sort of the workaround for this but again, not everyone has adopted it because of patent/fear of lawsuit issues.

The media section does not have this size limitation because the media section is for more permanent archiving of images and other media bits. I've mentioned it to a few before, the media section is simply better suited for embedding full albums (better than klovimg IMO), tagging, SEO and other bits. If you plan on cross-posting images across multiple threads, it's best to use the media section and either hotlink to the images or use the media album BBCODE to embed the photo album to your posts.

A lot of the stuff involved with Arcade preservation and restoration on the internet heavily involves photos and videos; This is also the reason why i pushed to have the media section side-bar on the forums to push more interaction there but the idea never picked up steam.
