I'm ready to hear some first person accounts about CAX.

I felt the same way playing it on MAME until I did my first four animal jump. When you see 6000 points appear on the screen, it feels pretty good. Now, I think it's a great game. As for the sound, I like the brick sound. My son thinks it's a gun sound.

That game is very addictive! Greed kills me on the coconut levels quite regularly. Just one more strawberry...just oonnnneee more... DAMNIT!!!

Leslie showed up and we talked (about Corba Comnad), saw Jow and his family for all of 10 minutes. Hung out with the usual susp

Haha - I was ribbing Leslie on DLP that there wasn't going to be a CC there this year, did he mention anything about that?

Funny you should mention that... We were talking CC and suddenly he breaks out in song.

"I gonna luv me havok and 69
Rub him down with sum calamine
Cuz you make me swollen and I'm koll like that
Reach around my helo from the front to back."

It freaked me out cuz I thought he wanted to do what with the Major Havoc game? Now it all makes sense, thanks for clearing that up.

-Finally got to play Big Bang Bar!!!! YAY! Some other good pinball rarities too, like Jolly Park, Orbitter 1, Transporter, etc.

transporter... as in transporter the rescue? the bally game? we have one on route. i absolutely love it for some weird reason.

Also, EVB should be considered a contender to make a run at FLY's world record in track and field.
It may or may not happen, but it definitely could.

Yeah, I met Hector there at Bill's T&F, hit a 99.45 on the hammer throw right when he came up to take a look. Nice guy. He took a few records on my machine and took the high score so I have something to shoot for now. Will shall see if I get motivated enough. ;)

Speaking of TnF, how come TG doesn't have records for individual events for the arcade version? I watched an 11-yr-old-girl - who hasn't played the game in while - school my buddy this past weekend. She put up a 9.05s 110m Dash (using a simple 2-hand method - not a 3-finger or cheat method), and could probably do better with more practice. She holds every damn record on the machine....

What is the cheat method a pencil?
9.05s on the 100m dash is pretty slow but not horrible at all.
Yeah, I think it would be pretty cool if they kept track of all the events as well.
Hector got a 7.85s on the 100m dash on my machine. Fortunately he was 1 100th of a second shy of my 7.84s I have up there. :D

I liked the new location as well. A bit more room would be nice given this years' volume of games.

A few show favorites:

- good population of pins and some 1960s and 1970s EM and early video games.

- good crowd

- Rockafire Explosion movie. Worth seeing when it comes out on DVD and can be viewed from several perspectives. A good film to watch with a group for some good fun, imho. Others may view from a bit more serious and sentimental perspective... A very well produced film given the limited subject matter.

My pet peeves about the show:

- A Berzerk that was not set to freeplay, had the coin door locked and sat on the floor in demo mode all weekend. What's the point? Unless the owner lost the key or credit switch, this was pretty lame on the part of the owner. I don't even think it was for sale (see below).

- high-maintenance/complex games that weren't tested or 'bulletproofed' before coming to CAX for the weekend. It would be nice if the owners would leave the game on for few days prior to the show to make sure they work and, if they don't, fix them or don't bring them. Otherwise, we end up with a bunch of interesting, but dead or partially working, games.

An example is Star Castle. A very challenging game to properly repair and fix, but the game can be prepped for two days of continuous action with some TLC. However, there is no point in bringing it to the show if it has not been checked out and cleaned up as it will fail in an unmaintained mode. Of course, some of these game are brought to the show in hopes of selling them. Their actual working condition is secondary. The side effect is that small parts of the show floor become sales display areas and not game playing areas.

My suggestion for a future show:

- As was done with Guitar Hero, do a mini Track and Field and Hyper Sports Olympics. There are some awesome players at CAX. Put the action on a big screen so others can watch the button pounding action. Might attract some new players (kids) to participate as someone mentioned earlier. Do a 12 players tourney or something.

I think it would be cool, but so many records would be tied I believe.
1000 people have jumped 9.72 on the long jump, and thrown 99.98, or 99.45 on the hammer.

Back in the day I actually saw a 9.76 on the long jump. I'm guessing it was the other rom set but you are right there. A lot of those would be pointless to track since you can get over 100m on the javelin and the hammer throw and I'm guessing it's only physically possible to get maybe 2.52 on the high jump maybe 2.53. Of course if you get the magic 2.55 the next one starts a grown level so that would be technically cheating. :D Ahhh.. T&F is a great game!

Understood. My point was more to showcase some fantastic game playing and skill on the big screen for others to enjoy rather than winning prizes. Perhaps a prize tournament by age groups or skill levels. The T&F pros would have to compete in a demo tourney with the real 'prize' being getting more people interested in the game, showing off their skills, and generally promoting the hobby.

You could then do a generational face-off between the Guitar Hero champs and the T&F Olympics champs to give each side a little humility...

Really? I thought I saw people playing it all weekend and I believe it was on free play as I have never had to coin it up. I saw Mark Robichek playing it Sunday and noticed really annoying beeping sounds. I opened it up to turn down the sound and it wouldn't coin up.

My Defender wasn't playable later in the show either because someone ripped out the joystick.

I'm getting burned out of bringing games as I do my best to get them in good shape and they still break down. I'm strapped for time and money to fix them lately.

Well for me I didnt get to make it but i love hearing all the mess after, the great and shitty games. The people met and cant wait for more pix. SOCALMIKE great job on the vids in the other post....Keep the stories coming, and damn I sure want to go one year...

That's funny. If you would have been there Friday night or at my house any time in the 8 months I have owned the game, you would know that it died on me on Saturday morning and it pretty much ruined part of the show for me that two of the games that I brought broke after transporting them 300+ miles to share with everyone. It's also strange that with my phone number on the game and it being such a simple fix, no one from KLOV called me to give me a hand. I'll remember this next year when I see games that aren't on the list next year.

For me the best part was getting to meet klov'ers and for my family to have fun (which they did). As much fun as I had though, I actually didn't enjoy it quite as much as the Seattle show. Having the pins and vids mixed in the same room, especially given the enormous amount of games, made it difficult to find klov'ers and also meant playing fewer games because it would have been much more difficult to keep track of my kids. Fortunately my wife was awesome about letting me run off to talk to people and stuff though.

Matt, fixing broken games was one of the things that was awesome about the Seattle show, and I think that was really facilitated by the fact that you didn't have to hunt to find klov'ers - we were all hanging out in the same area most of the time because of the segregated vids. It was just a super strong sense of community. I think the size and layout of CAX doesn't lend itself to that same sense of community, though probably my opinion is clouded by the fact that outside of the show (and inside for that matter) I was with family rather than partying with all you guys.

Despite the squabbles that happen here on klov sometimes, it seems like meeting klov'ers in person gives me a better impression of them than I had before. I'm sure there are plenty of tools in this hobby but I'm glad that so far, my experience has been that everyone is really cool when you meet them in person.

+1

I wish I could have stayed late into the night to talk to more guys that I didn't get a chance to really talk to.

Like Jow and Arcadejunkie, both guys were really helpful in pointing me towards KLOV and warming up to the hobby. I briefly said hi to you Taylor, but after the photo op, I kind of got lost in the scuffle and games. I didn't know what you looked like Jow, so I may have crossed paths with you and didn't know it. Without guys like these, I wouldn't be in KLOV and I wouldn't have ever heard of CAX.

Like TheShanMan mentioned, it was a pleasure meeting a lot of you guys in person and really seeing how much cooler everyone is when they are not at home typing on a keyboard.

ok ill chime in here. the layout of the room was awkward and could have been done in rows and most people would have prefferred it that way. the location was great and hotel price was good enough for me. food was a bitch if you dont know the area. alot of klovers i wanted to meet but never ran across.
