All,

It looks like my hobby may be coming to an end. My company is relocating me and all the other train dispatchers around the country to Atlanta GA. We aren't sure when but it will happen later this year.

I have 2 nice Dynamo HS-27 cabinets and at least 25 PCBs. Most importantly I have all the rotary games and all the rotary joysticks. I had big plans but now this....

I currently live in a big house with plenty of room for this hobby. We are probably going to have to rent for 6-12 months while our house here sells so we can afford to buy a new one near Atlanta (they are 2x more expensive than here).

I will not have space for all of this stuff. Probably no space for any of it. Should I pay to store it in a unit or sell it all? I don't need or want the money, I'd rather keep it all but what's the point if ultimately we don't find an affordable roomy house.

Has anyone else had to sell under these circumstances?

This sucks,
Andy

That sucks to hear... but 2 cabinets and 25 PCBs? Take 'em with you! Even the smallest of apartments can fit that. My friend had a 1 BR apt. that we filled up with around 30 cabs. It was pretty ridiculous, but I'd totally make room for 2.

And the cabs are roomy inside... turn them into storage for the PCBs and parts.

Keep them even if you have to put them in a environmental control storage place.

Sell them only if you want to complain how expensive things are or how hard it is to find good stuff at the right price..

Sell. My brother-in-law is in Champaign, he will swing by and pick up a few games.

PM and we can discuss pricing.

Two of these? Only two? Ah, those were the days. I have 40 games in the basement arcade now (and others in storage), and thus, I'll never move. LOL

Keep them. You'll regret it if you sell them.
I had ten games in my bachelor apartment for years. Still had lots of room to move.

Got 100's of PCBs too. Oh, don't get me started. Do what DogP suggested. :)

I would say sell the cabinets and keep all the boards.
The cost of moving the boars and storing the boards is minimal.
The cost of moving the cabinets and storing the cabinets will be expensive.

Just buy new cabinets once you get all moved in instead of shipping them and storing them.

Keep them. You'll have "seller's regret" if you get rid of them.

Especially if they are the cabs pictured above. For some reason, I was thinking YUGE cockpit models that would be a royal pain.

I've got 3 uprights and a cocktail in the kitchen... when we move, those are definitely coming with us. Doesn't matter where we move.

TRUE STORY

In 2016 I sold my house in Ohio I owned for 12 years and all my minty fresh games. 13 ft SkeeBall, Galaga, Ms Pac, Space Harrier, Rally X, Mr DO (dedicated), Defender Multi-WIlliams. All restored by me.

I was offered a job at a MAJOR internet company in Arizona so I figured.. I got all this once.. I can get it again. Especially since we were self-moving and would be moving into a 2 bedroom apartment from a 3000sq ft house.

Long story short... 6 months later the company laid off about 20 people (including me) and there I was with nothing.

8 months after that I was offered a job in Virginia, moved and now in a better situation but had to start all over again. There's almost no way I could afford to buy back what I had or even something worth restoring at current prices.

Put the things you care about most in storage, pay the bill and if, a year later you realize you want to let it all go, then make the decision.

I kick myself constantly over selling stuff that brought me and my family so much fun.

Semi happy ending... I found a couple of really cool collectors locally who have helped me immeasurably in getting back into the hobby. So, if you DO sell your stuff, you still might find yourself back in the hobby.

Good luck with everything.

On another note. What is going on in Atlanta seems like a lot of jobs are getting moved there.
Yeah my company has move there also " Mercedes-Benz" the state give lots of corporate incentives to move in. Most of us found out its more expensive in Atlanta then even parts of NJ.

Worst case, do you have a buddy you can offload them onto temporarily, until you get moved and make/find space? I've had to do that before, it's a win-win. They get to play kickass games for a bit and you don't have to let the games go or pay stupid expensive storage fees.

I moved from Palos Park IL (south suburb of Chicago) to Eagle River Alaska. I took it all, almost 40 games and as much of my crap as I could cram into the rig. I had one container for house stuff, and one for games, company paid for it all. Most games currently sit in storage at $300 per month, but plan is to build a big garage at the new place we bought. House is small but plenty of land to build on. If it doesn't work out by the end of this year I'll probably start selling it off.

I'd say take it and sell it off if you must once your new situation shakes out. Selling a house in IL right now sucks big donkey ba**s.

Do this.

Assuming it was only a year or two, I'd offer you space in my basement, but I'm like 5-6hours in the wrong direction for you. I'll even turn them on from time to time to give you updates on how they work. Purely QA. ;)

At the minimum keep the boards if you plan to get rid of the cabs.

Yeah, I'd try to keep them if it meant storing them... but if that's not possible, package up the PCB's nicely and keep those. You can always pick up another JAMMA cabinet...

Dude, 2 cabinets with 25 boards to swap.

It's like your collection knew you were gonna move 10 years before you did.

Easy-peasy move and takes up minimal space! Keep!

Yeah i rented a shop close by my house and put all my games there.
I like it better like that anyways, Keep your house a house and have a seperate bug out space. Has security cams, electricity 110/220 and heat.
Now i can even run my table saw at 3am and nobody around to complain .

What does your rent cost? Are you an actual operating arcade?

Well i rented a cheaper place that i moved to , and the arcade space is another 250 a month.
No its strictly private storage/shop .
also has a movie projector setup now , fridge , microwave , internet and coffee maker.
there is an indoor skateboard park in the building next to me so i can also go over and watch kids break thier legs .
