I hate Donkey Kong. Not the machine I rebuilt, just the game itself. And honestly, it's not so much the game even...it's just that I suck horribly at it.

I love the restored machine I have and probably wont ever give it up, but what are my options for playing other games on it? I want to keep it all original without destroying any wiring or changing monitors etc etc. What would I need to use one of the 60N1 or xxxN1 in this machine without changing anything inside (other than disconnecting the current boardset)?

Once I can get my hands on another machine it will go back to a dedicated DK, but for now since it's the only machine I have, I would like to play other games on it

Do yourself a favor, sell the DK (or keep it original) and get one of the dime a dozen vertical Jamma cabs with multiple buttons that makes it a plug and play affair.
Discussing trying to turn a DK into a 60-1 bootleg might get some very negative reactions here. What you are wanting to do will require changes that you say are off limits.

I didnt realize the xxxN1's were bootleg...hmmm. I'm not about to sell it or turn it into anything, I worked too hard getting this guy back as original as I could, I'm just wanting to get some play out of it until I can afford more machines, or even another cabinet to do other things with. There arent a lot of options in the area I live it seems.

Ahh well, thanks for the input. I will let it sit until I can get something else.

not real sure but cant you swap it with popeye? IDK.

I wouldn't put a worse game in it... You could put a double donkey kong setup in it. Then you could play DKJr as well. Personally, I prefer DKJr over DK. Actually, I am a weird one and prefer DK3 the best out of all of them.

However, if you can afford to do that, then you can afford to pick up a turd machine and slap a multiboard or mame in it.

Yeah, I'd do a double-DK or leave it be.

Look for a Dynamo cabinet. Those are the most versatile of all of them. Most have monitor grooves to change the monitor orientation from horizontal to vertical and back again. Get one with a populated CP (plenty of holes) and you can easily replace buttons and sticks in them. Then you can run JAMMA games-a-plenty. A great option when you're running out of room (believe me!)

Nintendo uses inverted video for its games, so 60 in 1 ain't gonna happen without using an inverter to change the pcb's signal to the inverted signal your monitor requires.

To interface with your DK multi-wiring harness, you're gonna need to build something custom. I seem to remember SOMETHING being sold out there somewhere, but I'll be damned if I can find it now.

It's not going to be easy to convert that cab temporarily.

Okay, I just checked your local Craigslist and if I lived there I'd be getting some new games lol. Two things I've noticed: 1) Your Ms Pacs are cheaper 2) You're just over an hour from Shreveport, LA which has several good games that have been listed within the last few weeks.

They include:

http://shreveport.craigslist.org/vgm/3071813189.html - Nice condition working Popeye for $350.

http://shreveport.craigslist.org/tag/2979134123.html - Dedicated Time Pilot Cabaret? I'm not sure on this one but I would've bought it.

I also saw a Joust that popped up for $300... Some top tier games drop in your area. Hmm... I need to look into that Time Pilot ;-).

Yeah Ive had an eye on that Popeye, but working for a school and only getting paid once a month it's kind of hard to lay out that kind of money right now without cutting into savings, which isnt going to happen because of the budget cuts that the Texas legislation is proposing in education which could mean my salary getting cut...again...or losing my job entirely (scary).

Soooo...what will have to happen for me is to save up my "spending money" over the next few months and then start looking for machines to buy. I've been looking for anything in the less than 100 dollar range that people just want gone...but nothing has showed up.

I would put out a Craigslist wanted ad because a lot of people who don't normally advertise might respond. A vertical JAMMA with no board would be dirt cheap, I have even seen quite a few of them for free though they are usually gone by the time I respond.

Take your rare TKG3 board with the ladder cheat and turn it into an X-Box 360, then bolt controllers to the CP, smash the sanyo and put in a sweeet LCD and then attach a couch to the front panel so it will be just like you're playing X-Box on your couch, except with a real donkey kong machine!

No, seriously though. DK is a hard game but the more you play the more it sucks you in. You can keep the cab unmodified and put in a DK Jr. board, but that game is just as hard. Popeye, Mario Bros, or Vs systems would require you reorient the monitor horizontally (as would many Jamma games). If you get an edge connector type harness you can put in 2-board DK, D2K, DK Jr. and DK3 all in the same cab with no permanent modifications and easily swap between those games. Your 4-board PCB is almost certainly one of the rare old ones with a soldered Z80 chip so adding D2K to that board would be destructive. Also, D2K is way harder than DK. "Double Donkey Kong" is a shitty solution because the sound for DK is not right (because you're playing DK through the sound section of a DK Jr. board.)

You might be able to do a non-destructive MAME or Jamma set up but remember, your monitor is vertical, so that limits some of the games.

Really, most of these coin-op arcade games from this era are hard and designed to take your money.

I already have the inverter and a Jamma harness because of this game being a Trog before I got it...and I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron and schematics. Time is one resource I have a lot of, money not so much right now, so building something to swap the wiring over without hacking it up might be a possibility. Would I just need to build a header to plug the jamma harness into with the headers for the DK wiring on the other side?

Yeah the vertical screen is something I am cool with, so is only running a game that uses one button and a joystick to play.

Honestly, I want Galaga...it's my favorite game of all time and one that my son also realllly enjoys playing.

My daughter wont even go close to the DK machine because she thinks nerd cooties will jump on her so maybe I could get her to play something else as well :)

honestly if my money wasn't so tight I'd offer to buy your Donkey Kong and drive after it. As I recall I'm lucky if I make it to the second stage in the arcade or so but I still love that game.

There's also alot of games I like that I'm just no good and for some reason I can't ever hate the game...

If you were closer, I could let one of my games find it's way to your place on loan. I would even try to help you get better at DK.

I think you're exaggerating the sound difference A LOT. Yes, there is one but unless you're really looking for it or very knowledgeable about DK sounds you probably won't even notice. I've got machines with both setups and I barely notice.
