IL vs. Competition joysticks...What's the difference?

I just installed 2 IL joysticks on a MK2 cab.
Whats the difference between the IL and Competition joysticks?

Better movement?
Easier to hit the 8 way?

Thanks!

I recommend IL sticks which seem to last forever and have better parts and longevity. The initial performance to me is similar but the IL stick I am told has a better center bushing and the actuator lasts a lot longer.

If you buy Happ make sure you buy the Competion and not the supers which is a lower grade stick for more money.

I couldn't disagree more. Of the 3 common bat sticks, competition, ultimate and super, I think the Super is hands down the best one.

You aren't going to wear any of them out in home use.

I have wanted to try these sticks out too from Groovy Game Gear since it sounds like they bring a lot to the table in regards to innovation. Anyone have experience with these?

The GroovyGameGear SmoothStick is the smooth and virtually silent alternative to the standard Competition 8-way joysticks. It offers precise, "no-click" performance when installed in the control panel, and is even adjustable at the switch level, due to the incorporation of our VersaMicro™ switches.

I you don't like your sticks to click when actuated, these are what you are looking for.

Includes:

  • VersaMicro™ Microswitches - .187" Terminals
  • Dust washer
  • Tall handle suitable for wood or metal panels
  • Smooth-floating square actuator for perfect 8-way performance!
  • E-Clip
  • Switch Adjustment Tool

Also, if you want crazy good sticks and don't mind shelling out the cash then the Happ Perfect 360 is awesome and even takes Wico handles. I have a set with repro Robotron handles on my mame cabinet.

I want to revise my opinion, the IL sticks are superior, the nylon on the joystick shaft that the actuator rides on and the nylon actuator makes a noticeable difference.

Also, Paradise Arcade has the IL Eurosticks on sale for $10 each right now! Don't mess with those crappy sticks from GGG. The Eurosticks come with gold plated Cherry switches, you won't find better switches.

I just bought some of the IL sticks. I would have to look again but I don't think they had the nylon on the shaft.

It is my understanding that the IL sticks are the acutal Competition sticks from yesteryear. Happ went cheap-ass-China route with their competition sticks... which look pretty much identical but are not.

Yes, they are the same molds made with different materials. Although it should be known that IL designed the Eurostick/Competition and HAPP licensed it, then later cheapafied it.

I was not able to make it to my other house today to check the IL sticks. I'll get there tomorrow since I need to get my plow working and that is where it is at.

Mike, did you ever figure out if they changed the nylon?

I forgot to post about this. Yes they still have the nylon. I took picks and forgot to post them. I was mixing them up with the Happ ones I installed at the same time.

4 months later, I've finally gotten around to changing the joysticks on my KI. wasn't terribly fond of Paradise packing the sticks fully assembled, but whatever.

if any part was black on the Comps, they're not on the Euros. :) I haven't turned the game on, cause I don't wanna wake the dead with the power on BONG!!!! sound, but I can already feel a significant difference. FWIW, when I bought the blue Comps for my KI initially, I swapped over the white actuators from the joysticks the cab had originally had because the black Comps would stick and rotate with the shaft and bind up. they were like this for a long time until I did the stiff spring replacement, which turned out to be a major mistake. for whatever reason, the actuators were shaped differently, they just had straight edges, they didn't have that second angle like the Euro/Comp design.

I think I was able to finally track down the white ones again, they might be in my MK cab now which does actually have the stiff springs still (works great for MK for some reason)

Il is much better than the happs, but both brands were diaganals out quickly on fighters. Jlw sanwa sticks with a circle gate from ultimarc (they call it j stik) will have huge precision over the il sticks.

Or just use a super. The gate is circle, they were OEM on a lot of fighting games and they last forever.
