Hello if anyone is an Ikari warriors fan out there, I just made a free play ROM hack since I could not find one already out there. I thought I would share it with anyone who might want it.

This is my first real "useful" ROM hack right now it's only been tested in MAME, but it's pretty darn simple and should not effect game play at all as the only instructions added are immediately after the system startup test, the other hacks are in place operand changes to the original code that do not add or subtract any CPU cycles.

it's for the mame rom "ikari" which is supposed to be the JAMMA ikari version. It replaces rom.1 as labeled in the MAME zip file.

I have not looked at the non-jamma version yet. But that's next as I think my physical ikari game is a non-jamma boardset and the point is to update my game ROM so I don't have to "coin up".

if your interested you can get the hacked ROM at
http://www.paladingrp.com/brianb/rom_hacks/roms/ikari-free-play/1.rom

I will also be documenting step by step how I did the hack for anyone who's interested. I hoping to make it so people who have never did a ROM hack and want to learn how can follow along to learn how to do one step by step.

When finished the guide will be at
http://www.paladingrp.com/brianb/rom_hacks/ikari.html
Theres a page there now with my scattered notes that I took while doing it, but it's not really readable nor consistent as I changed my methodology while writing the hack.

have fun

I am in the middle of converting a cut-cornered MKII back into an Ikari Warriors so...

Do it, Do it.... Do it!!! (please :D)

Thanks for documenting and sharing this!

Even though I use quarters in my arcade, it's nice to have options. Having the ROM check disable identified makes it easier to do other hacks.

Nice work! And thanks for documenting it too. I wish more people would do the same. It's super helpful for people who are learning this stuff, and I think its interesting to see what particular approach and tools were used.

No problem. I think its cool to share knowledge as much as possible. There are so many things I'd like to learn and I wish there were nice follow through examples to help me get up to speed on things that I'm not used to. So I figured hopefully this will help someone out who is also trying to learn. By the way I just finished the writeup for the The "total" guide to this hack.

I will be doing the non-jamma hack soon as I just checked my cabinet and it's definitely a non-jamma setup. after that I think I'm going to make a web application that will allow you to customize the intro screen to replace the "copyright tradewest etc etc etc" to something cool like "brians arcade". I'm going to make the web app allow someone on the internet to put in what they'd like to appear as the intro text and then it will automatically insert that into the rom image on the fly and let people down load it. I think that would be neat. Then people can have a personailzed ikari machine.

The non JAMMA hacks are complete. This time there are 2 ROMS (p1.com, and p2.rom) and there is no need to disable the ROM check as it doesn't lock up if it fails. Also I've removed the "99" from each side of the "FREE PLAY" banner in this version.

The non-jamma version hack is complete and tested. pic of it running on my real cabinet at attached. (this version has been further modified to have a personalization screen) the ROM version on the website has the normal SNK electronics company, attract mode screen.
