A buddie of mine wants me to fix his Slot machine, its a Red White and Blue IGT machine.
Currently I am getting an error message 12 (bad backup battery) and I have a battery on the way.
The big problem I am having is that the coin comparator is not turning on/ when I drop a coin in, it just falls through (there is a comparing coin inserted into the machine properly).
Any Ideas or Suggestions as to where I should start? I am fairly familiar with Arcade machines, but I have never looked at a slot machine before.

Start with the easist first. Have you adjusted the comp. sensitivity? Double check the wiring harness that plugs into it as well. Those wires are pretty tiny and fragile and are easily broken/pulled out if they are manhandled. Make sure the coin in the comp is seated properly.

Yea I tried adjusting the sensitivity, it looks like the CC-10 isnt getting any power, the light isnt turning on when i flip the power on, and all the wiring looks good

The coin comparator will not work while you have the 12 error. It will not allow the machine to accept money until all errors are cleared. Once you replace the battery and clear the error (which will probably change to 61 - hold the white button until it says 61-1 then turn the reset key and shut the door), then it should start working....

BTW - if you have a Batteries Plus nearby, they often have these in stock. Ask for the 1/2AA lithium 3V with axial leads. Sometimes they don't understand what axial means, so take a resistor or something along and say "like this". Not all locations keep them in stock, but mine does. I just bought 3 yesterday...

Yeah, what I usually do is replace the battery with a single C size battery holder and mount it on the outside of the metal case, that way if it dies, i leave the power on, and replace the battery.

Ok so i got the Error 12 canceled, ended up using the double C method, works great, i have been monitoring the voltage drop, should last a good long time.

I seem to be having some other issues with it now, I was adjusting one of the reels (the numbers were coming undone) i realized that i left the machine on, and i tilted it with a 4x code (reel x has been tilted) and i consulted the IGT S+ guide i got from IGT, and i cant seem to clear it. It says close door, and turn reset key, it seems to go into the debug menu just fine but it wont reset the code, any tips?

Edit: as per the topic at hand, i was able to clear all the codes at one point and I got the game running, but i was getting no power to the comparator (checked with a multimeter) any ideas from there?

If the reels work and are connected, the 4x error usually clears just by shutting the door. Make sure the door latch is coming all the way down so that the sensor registers.

As for your coins, is your "insert coin" light coming on? If not, the machine may still be thinking there is an error or the door is open. Can you add credits by pushing the button on the optic board?

When you get into test, one of them spins the reels to the jackpot when you hit the "spin reels" button. That will also sometimes clear reel errors that the door doesn't clear.

You can swap reel connectors to see if the error moves. If so, check that reel. If not, make sure your pcb and connectors behind the hopper are good. There is also a controller chip for each reel on the board.

Thanks i'll try it. At the moment the door sensors are shot, i have the cables stripped and exposed and i "emulated" the door being closed, i went to radioshack today and got some new IR Led's to replace em tho :)

As far as when it was working, it was working perfectly when the system running, i could hit the test button and it would coin in, but no green light, checked the 24v line into the CC-16, and i got nothing.

Ok, so i think i tracked down the issue with the comparator, i powered it up and was dropping coins thru it on my desk using a power supply. for some reason the board isnt powering it up. either way, i am now having issues with my reels, i get a error 43, and i cant seem to clear it, if i go into diagnostics, i can do an alignment set and all 3 motors spin properly. i have already tried swapping the cables around, stays 43, motor driver is good (i have a tester i made with an arduino a while back for doing 3d printer stuff), yet i cant seem to clear the code, it started happening when i moved the reel whilest it was on accidentally (as i said above) and yet it still wont clear. i dont know whats going on, so i pulled the board and now i am getting an error 12 again lol, looks like this thing is really messed up.

Machine will not power the comparitor unless all codes are cleared. Comparitor will only have power when "insert coin" is lit. For the reel error check to see if all the pins are seated in the connector. Sometimes when you switch reels the pins will push out the back of the connector.

Error 12 will clear later. Don't worry about it that much. It pops up every now and then, usually when you don't seat something fully enough after pulling something out, but it'll clear when the door is shut properly...

As for your 43 error - if you swapped reel connectors and got the same error, then the problem isn't with the reels. It's either due to a connector issue somewhere between the main PCB and the reel connector, or it's due to a problem on the main PCB. Read this thread with a similar issue - and a possible fix if you have that issue:

And as stated - once you have all your errors cleared, the comparator will probably work just fine...

actually its funny, i was searching for this on google, and another post from here that NLG thread was posted, i am pretty sure its the board as of now, there is a bad component somewhere thats causing the cpu to read the driver as bad, and i was able to pick up a new board (without roms) for 30 dollars, plus i bought a new psu and wiring harness. all in all i spent like 70 dollars and for the prices on some other things, i could just straight replace everything on the inside and not spend more than 250. i hope its just that tho, i did check the powersupply and it may be that the 24v rail isnt being init'd or that its shot, but either way, the guy im doing this work for needs it done by christmas, so altho i'd like to pull it apart and fix it, im down to the wire so i cant :( i'll post with the results.

OHHHHH KAY!
Awesome, new parts came in and they fixed the reel problem. Still no coin comp tho.
I have been reading up on how the Coin Mechs Inc. Comparators work, and there should be power to it at all times, there is a 3rd wire that basically enables and disables the coin comp (IE Denies more coins after the max limit has been reached). I have replaced the harness to the door and the power supply, still nothing. I may just run a straight 24v rail over and see what happens, its possible that there is a optocoupler or something thats burnt out causing the 24v rail to not get to the comp. Not a huge issue right now tho, seems like everytime i clear and error code, another one appears, I have dealt with 12 (replaced the battery) 61 (reset the ram/cmos after battery was replaced) 41,42,43,49 (replaced the mainboard which was cheaper than replacing the motor drivers that were burnt), i have 3200 for like 1 minute and now its stuck on 3100. I have read over the guide as to what this error code is related to and the probable fixes, but i completely disassembled the hopper, there are no jams, and the sensor is working (i can have it do the 10 coin test just fine, 10 coins every time). I have tried tilt resetting it (open/close door) and it still stays. Any ideas?

1) Open the door, turn the jackpot reset key, close the door.

2) open the door, hold white button for 3-4 seconds until error clears or changes, turn jackpot reset key, close door.

3) you may need to replace the hopper payout switch...

I have seen alot of the comparitor power supplys bad. Have you checked it out? You can buy rebuilt ones for pretty cheap. Just make sure you get the right one because there are a few different ones.
Any time you loose your battery or do a clear the DBV will need to be turned back on using the set chip. Sorry if someone has already said this, its too late to read through the whole thread....good luck.
