If you had to multi-game, what would you recommend?

Easy answer: 60 in 1
Best Emulation: MAME (requires LOTS OF effort and support)
Middle of the road alternative: Rpi with JAMMA adapter.

My 60/1 cocktail was my first game 10 years ago. All brand new. For a non collector or someone with little space this has been great. I also have an Ultracade I bought for way less with 250 games, my son & I have had hours of fun on these.

I would also say just go with the basic 60-in-1. Yeah, the sounds are off and other little things are not quite right, but there's a huge majority of the population out there that simply doesn't notice these things or give a damn about them if they do. Multi games have their use and it sounds like your neighbor is exactly the person they're good for, and you'll be helping your neighbor's kids develop an appreciation for classic arcade games.

The 60-in-1 has a lot of games from the early 80s era, but if your neighbor was more into the MK/Street Fighter era of games you might want to look into another product. But for basic classic arcade games the 60-in-1 is inexpensive and about as simple as it gets to either install into a jamma cabinet or build into one of your own. There's a guy around here who's taking old barrels, putting a glass top and a cheapo LCD in them, and making cocktail 60-in-1s he's selling for $1000+. I'm sure there's some barrel collecting forum out there who'd be up in arms about this, but you don't necessarily have to convert an existing game to make a multi.

Multi games are like pot and beer... for most people that's all they're ever going to need, but they're a gateway to the serious hard stuff for a select few. I think they're valuable to the hobby overall, as long as they're done without screwing up another game (which happens way too often).

Hi all!

I have a neighbor who wants a multi-game.

I sat down with him for a few hours and... despite my best efforts, I was unable to convince him to get a warehouse and buy 120 games, or even convert a few hundred square feet of his house into a proper arcade.

While I can't understand what strange disease is keeping him from being sensible about this, I agreed to help him find a great multi-game for him and his kids.

So - if you were to buy an "off the shelf" 60+ (or 412+, etc) game style multi-game, what would you get?

He's interested in cocktails and uprights.

(Also if this has already been discussed, feel free to link me ... I did a search but couldn't find a good thread on this)

Thank you!

Arpicade - don't buy any other board. Period. Don't waste money on anything else.

I agree with this, but the general population that wants to play Ms. Pac and Galaga aren't going to go through the learning curve to get this to run properly.

if the general populous orders the arpicade through HighScoreSaves, it practically comes
pre-set up fully. just stick it in your jamma-cab, wham bam thank you ma'am.

He is building the system for his neighbor... So I presume he will set it up and they will just enjoy.

Go to the guys computer and load up mame or what ever consoled the kid is using see if they have atari classics..

Once they tired of playing.. you will never be bugged about building a 1n60 again..

My two cents, use Sanwa JLF joysticks with octagon restrictors, best 4/8 way combo Stick imho.

Don't buy from Holland. The guy is a douche and there are much better vendors available. He sells the cheapest product he can buy with zero understanding of what he's got.

We have a new cocktail out soon. Not cheap but it is decked out and can take any of tbe systems mentioned, including mame.

The less are responsive to action on the control panel.

Never understood why people who can rebuild crt's and fix game boards etc always say that it's so hard to put a mame system together.
They are not hard at all. Getting a front end to run with mame couldn't be simpler these days and is quite fun imo. Half the people who say it's hard probably haven't even given it a go. It's ridiculous.
These people are missing out on the best emulation that is available.

A well done MAME cab takes WORK. A lot of it.

Is he the kind of person who calls another vendor a douche and tries to drive away their business?

Yeah... getting a decently working front end that is reliable is pretty difficult. I'm still struggling to make mine work reliably.

Every step of the way, things want to break or fight each other. So far I've gotten my system to boot into the front end when the power is turned on... but I don't want explorer running in the background because it fights for priority and tends to interrupt the front end. So I have explorer being killed at boot as well, but I also need a separate controller software running to handle a 2 player arcade stick setup and 2 usb game pads.

Then getting the emulator to behave properly, mapping all the buttons, finding working roms and cleaning through the dung pile of roms people include in rom packs that you're never going to play and don't need...

That's just the tip of the iceberg.

No he's the kind of douche who issues cease and desist letters from his lawyer because he is selling a generic joystick on Amazon, and you sell the same as his. (He claimed it was using his retrocade brand, which btw, he slapps on his knock off products of others too)
He also is the kind of douche that mis-labels at best or just flat out sells counterfeit controls labelled as something else.
He spams every damn thing he does, his "tags" on pages are simply ridiculous.
OH yeah and he not only knocks off other people's products, he then sells them as his own brand

But hey, give him your money because saving $5 is completely worth supporting someone who couldn't give a shit about the community and just wants to take every dollar he can for himself. (or maybe to pay his lawyer to try to intimidate others)

You will note, I specifically did not say buy from us, so instead of allowing the baseless crap to continue let me link the people I would buy from instead of Holland computers.
http://www.twistedquarter.com/ - Andy runs a great shop, and is a good guy
http://arcadeshop.com/ - Steve is a long time staple of the community
https://www.twistywristarcade.com/ - again community member designing new parts that HELP the community
http://www.ultimarc.com/ -Andy has been a staple of usb controllers for a long time
https://www.jammaparts.net/ -Nick and I have had differences, but he's a good guy and supports the community as well

There are a bunch more, sorry if I forgot people. I haven't ordered from highscoresaves and don't know him but he's here, and seems to have a good following.
