If you had to multi-game, what would you recommend?

Hi all!

I have a neighbor who wants a multi-game.

I sat down with him for a few hours and... despite my best efforts, I was unable to convince him to get a warehouse and buy 120 games, or even convert a few hundred square feet of his house into a proper arcade.

While I can't understand what strange disease is keeping him from being sensible about this, I agreed to help him find a great multi-game for him and his kids.

So - if you were to buy an "off the shelf" 60+ (or 412+, etc) game style multi-game, what would you get?

He's interested in cocktails and uprights.

(Also if this has already been discussed, feel free to link me ... I did a search but couldn't find a good thread on this)

Thank you!

-V

Take apart a major havoc or quantum. Also computer space works as a good shell for your 60 in 1s. Guaranteed you will be pleased with the results.

Warn him that the games sound like shit, and that the 60-in-1 is the go to for garbage. Seriously, there's better multi boards. The 412-1 vertical multi not only has a single game mode and better sound, it has much more games for a very easy price. The standard 60-in-1 cabinet is a cnc cut repro with vinyl side art, cheap chinese wiring harness and controls, widescreen lcd, and the god-awful sounding 60-in-1. Plus, his kids won't play it. I've sold enough of these for older guys who think their kids will find it cool to learn that it just sits while the kids play PS4 or Xbox 1. Last time I sold one I went for a Dynamo cabinet so I wouldn't feel bad (they were made for converting afterall), kept the CRT and recapped it, new PS, paint, CPO, nice marquee, looked very sharp and play a 412-in-1 board. Customer was way happy. I run into quite a few 60-in-1. Customers usually want rid of them after a bit.

Neopolss, what joystick did you use for the 412-1? imagine something that would play both 4 way and 8 way decently enough.

I mean... I'm not sure any of the multi-game boards are great... per say...

I have a relatively low cost setup that isn't hurting a classic game. Here's what I did:

1. Bought a C condition Ms Pacman upright for $100 off CL

2. Bought a Ms Pac to Jamma adapter from hotrod arcade -> (https://hotrodarcade.com/collections/game-parts/products/fully-restored-jukebox) $45

3. Bought a blank control panel from quarter arcade -> (http://www.twistedquarter.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=219_248&products_id=1353) $23 and they also have "multicade ready" versions with holes pre drilled

4. Bought a 450W switching power supply and assortment of joystick and buttons from hollandcomputers.com which was roughly $60 in parts

5. Also bought a Jamma 60-in-1 Icade Game Board from hollandcomputers.com which was also $60

Then I unplugged my Ms Pac board and control panel and stored them away safely. I plugged in the jamma adapter to the wiring harness in the game, plugged the 60-in-1 board into that. Populated the new control panel with new buttons and joystick. Plugged the game into a power strip and also plugged the power supply into the same power strip. Connected the new power supply to the 60-in-1 board... and then fired it all up and now I have an upright 60-in-1 cab that I can easily convert back into a classic Ms Pac in about 10 minutes.

Total cost:

About $300 for the entire thing

*shrugs* to be fair, my 7 year old daughter loves playing the 60-in-1 board. She loves Mappy and Mr Do's castle and Jumping Jack.

Are the games perfect? No. But I can't own all these games in my 1200 sq foot apartment.

^ this. these multi-game threads are against forum spirit de' corps...

a temp 1-week ban should be in place to prevent this madness.

multi-games are the aids of this hobby

Well, I think they have their place, but nothing compares to the real thing. OP should find out which games have a nostalgia to his friend (maybe two or three) and just try to source those dedicated cabinets.

Chinese multi's are crap.
If multi-gaming, the new RPI3-Retropie/JAMMA can't be beat, IMHO. :001_stongue:

I have nuthin' more to say on this subject, good afternoon, Sir.

Multis are GREAT for trading. Find a non-collector (likes to play, but doesn't care about the nostalgia) with two or three worn down originals collecting dust in their house, and trade for them a BEAUTIFUL 60-in-1 (with a SHARP LCD) that they can proudly display to all their other non-collector friends. :) Pry the dusty old originals out of the hands of those that don't appreciate them. "I'll give you 60 games for your three." :)

That's my point....you can build a really nice one for $300 (yet they market for $2000+). Trade that $300 game for $1000 worth of originals and everybody "wins". :) The VAST majority of the population will NEVER have more than one game in their home. So they DO appreciate the multi-game. It's only us CRAZY collectors that will fill all our free space with these (original, CRT-laden) beasts.

shit. u got a point. i got 30 of those beasts! haha

Assuming your neighbor is like 99.99% of America I'd tell him to get a 60-1. It has most of the games he heard of and played and he doesn't know what the original Gyruss sounds like so he won't give a crap that it's off on the 60-1. He also won't notice any of the other little inconsistencies in the other games that everyone bitches about.

Him and his kids will love it.

After that convince him to get a horizontal cab and put a 619-1 in it and he will have every game he could ever want.

If space is an issue look for an old gambling machine. You can do cool things with those and they are smaller.

I'm usually a very tolerant person...but I can't even stand within earshot of someone playing Gyruss on a 60-in-1. The sound is THAT offensive. :(

There were a LOT of reasons that I dumped the 60-in-1 for the Arcade SD, but Gyruss' sound issues were definitely high on the list. Galaxian and Moon Cresta were equally offensive.
