If you don't have fire insurance, GET IT!

Looks like he tried to get insurance. Not sure why he couldn't. At least he still has his business, hopefully, he will get pouring in support from the locals so he could rebuild. Sucks loosing family heirlooms though.

Hopefully some of the stuff is salvageable, like the tractor.

Maybe he could recoup something with the leftover parts of the games.

This is one concern I have had when I began looking into how to make my own dream recreational building to house my arcade games, theater, board games and workshop. So far I know I want a Steel Building, Steel Frame, Steel Roof, aluminum cased windows, reflective aluminum for insulation, Concrete/Tile floors with some sort of non-toxic non-flammable coating, no internal wiring or plumbing. I don't trust that stuff behind walls. Drywalls with Milkpaint only for paint, or pigmented plaster. The spacing and placing of the stuff, need to have firewall zones. Extinguishers for electrical fires on hand, and No Sega XY Vector games.

Very sad! That also happened to a Spokane area klover, a SURGE PROTECTOR caught his house on fire Christmas Eve and burnt it to the ground including his awesome collection!! Stories like this that have me living IN FEAR!!!! :( Good luck to the guy, looks like he had a bitchin' collection any of us would be proud of owning!

Nothing you can really do, but wow I feel sorry for him.

I have a fear of a game catching on fire everytime I plug them in mainly the first time. Most of us don't have any other choice than to use surge protectors or extension cords which makes me think even more about the dangers.

I wish I could do something to help, but I cannot. Sorry for his loss though he seems like a great guy.

Wow :( SW, DK, DKjr, Popeye, AD, Burgertime, Galaga, Mappy, EA, Joust, Q-Bert, Frogger, Ms. Pac, Dig Dug, Punchout, Basketball, Super Pac, and a bunch more plus a slew of memories up in smoke :(

There were many classic desirable games in that place. Moment of silence for the departed. That is truly a horrific thing to have happen. If the owner does see this thread I'm truly sorry my friend.

Wow, that really sucks .. wonder what the cause of the fire was. Condolences to the family, I know how bad home fires can be..

So does anyone else have specific policies taken out for their collections? I have extra home insurance for my home electronics, saltwater aquarium, and my arcade games.

a surge protector? You're scaring me :(

Something like this happened to me several years back.

There was a power strip/surge protector with lights pluged into it under my artificial Christmas tree, but on top of the tree skirt. The investigation found that a plastic tree needle got down into the power strip and instead of shorting it out it just got hot and melted and started a fire. The smoke detectors in the house were going off long before there was flames so I already had my fire extinguisher in my hand trying to figure out where the smoke was coming from. and the odd thing is the way the way the air was moving around the room the smoke looked like it was coming from behind an computer cabinet next to where the tree was.
Then it went from a little smoke to floor to roof flames almost instantly. I got the flames out bet the house was full of smoke and the room was BLACK.

almost $40K in damage and the insurance company was more than happy to take care of it all because more often than not in a case like this the entire house gets destroyed.

Just al little more on this, Make sure you teach your children to leave the house and have a meeting place in case of a fire. My boys did exactly what they were taught to do. leave the house, call the dog from out side, and go to the mail box. and sure enough that is where I found them.

a surge protector? You're scaring me :(
No shit... I guess 1/3 of house fires are caused by cheapo surge protectors (like what I use)... After hearing about the Spokane collector's surge protector caused fire I've been leaving mine unplugged when not in use. I'm thinking "eff, I have a dozen of those things around my house plugged in". I actually was sitting on my couch one day when the one plugged into the pinball machine started making noise. I walked and crawled around the entire livingroom until I figured out there was little flashes coming from behind a row of games. I pulled them off the wall and yoinked the surge protector out of the wall. After taking it apart it looks like it just got hot or something came loose and POOF!! Had I not been sitting right there when it started trippin' I might have made the news myself... I'm going to slowly start stepping up to the good surge protectors, but @ $40 a whack and needing a dozen of them thats adds up very quickly!!
