If I installed a cap backwards, how likely is it ruined??

I was capping my K7000 last night, and like a bonehead, I put in C40 backwards.

Turned my Paperboy on after the cap kit, smelled a slight burning smell, then saw the picture on the screen with vertical collapse. RATS!

So, I pulled it back out and saw I put C40 in backwards. I reversed it, and turned it back on. Still have vertical collapse.

So, question... did I fry the cap for sure? Can a cap survive being in backwards?

In my experience, it was toast as soon as it was turned on.

Once you smell the "magic smoke", it is already gone!

I'm surprised it didn't let out the magic smoke. I would discard it and install a new cap. But, your verticle collapse could be caused by other things...7000's have notoriously bad pcb's and have alot of trace lifting.

Most likely toast and probably other components as well. Caps rarely give off a burning smell, they just explode.
If you are in doubt, put an ohm meter across it and if you get 0 ohms, it's shorted. If you see the meter climbing in value, it may be Ok, but the value is probably no longer accurate.

In general, an electrolytic capacitor installed with the wrong polarity will be destroyed immediately upon power up.

So, I put the old cap back in and I still have vertical collapse.

Do you think the backwards cap took out of other components!??!

could be that the old cap was bad before, too.

I didn't have vertical collapse before I did the cap kit. Ugh!

I am going to the electronic store today. I am gonna shotgun a few common parts that cause vertical collapse on this monitor (according to the flow charts).

I hope that fixes it!

Not sure if they'll have that IC. Looks like HAPP does.

You'll pay thru the nose from Happ.

I've got to get an order from Electronix in a few days, I can toss one of those on top if you'd like.

Just looked it up, they're a couple of bucks. I'm going to get a couple anyway to have on hand as I can imagine that I'll need it one of these days.

Do you think YOU-DO-IT will have the ICs??

Is it UPC1378?
