...and eventually warms up to a full picture after, oh about 20 minutes, whats a common culprit? Bad caps maybe?

Sorry, I have no specifics, Im considering buying a game sight unseen and this is what the seller is describing. I can tell you its a 19" standard res. monitor and I have seen photos of it fully working, with what appears to be a good picture.

Of course I'm not asking anyone to diagnose what cant be seen, just curious as to what you would typically blame.

If it's a solid, thin line with nothing else, then cold solder joints would be the first thing I'd check. Then, of course, caps - but chances are it's a cold solder joint. Banging on it will probably bring back the picture.

If it's folding over to a narrow image, then it's caps.

Nothing special, just pull the chassis, do the usual recap, and check over solder joints. Should be good as new :)

Lines on the sprites could be a board issue. Ram chip?

Dosent look like a board issue. Ive seen screen shots and dont see any problems. Sounds like he's describing a monitor issue. Caps and checking solder joints for sure, but just looking for any sort of "reassurance" I can get that will basically tell me it can be reasonably fixed before I jump the gun. I think I'm getting a good deal regardless.

ah, a monitor you're looking to buy? it's easily a chassis problem, which means it's fixable at least. lol

I'd do the solder joints and cap it. at least then you'll rule out a lot of other problem points right away.

check the remote board pots and headers as well. you know that if a remote board is unplugged it'll just be a thin line. could be a messed up V-size pot too. not sure how that would have anything to do with it working after warming up though, but with monitors it's best to just hit up all the usual suspects, and then you can move on.

yoke conector pins possibly... burnt or cracked solder joints is my guess..

hard to tell wihout looking at it or knowing more about it..

This would be my guess as well. When you start it up if you have a solid line try hitting the side of the cab and see if it makes the image on the screen full size. If it does then you should start by reflowing the solder on the yoke pin header.

Thanks for all these pointers. I decided to go ahead and go for it, picking the game up this weekend and will look into the monitor soon afterwards.
