What do you think the ideal Video Game to Pinball Machine Ratio (VG:pBMR) is?

I am pretty sure 5:1 is the correct answer, but I would love some feedback.

I think 10:3 is a good ratio. At least that is where I am currently at, and it seems to work.

No more than 1:10. Assuming you actually want to enjoy your game room and not have it be an arcade museum.

I've owned pretty much every classic vid you would want to own and there are VERY few that didn't get boring almost immediately.

I'm at a 3:1 ratio in the house, and if you include the game in the shed a 4:1 ration. I'd rather be at a 5:2 ratio.

I have found that most of the "must have" classics from my youth are way too easy and boring and have come and gone from my gamecondo in short order while the ones I thought were too hard BITD are the permanent fixtures. Out of curiosity, how much more work are pinballs than vids? I keep wanting to add at least 1 pin, but am concerned re: maintenance. Thanks!

Pins are a lot more work. Way more. Did I mention they're a lot more work?

Actually it's not that bad. Just get something that someone else has restored and you should be good with minor upkeep for quite a while. If you want to do your own restoration it can be quite time consuming.

I agree about the vids. I know it's not really in the spirit of this forum but many of the dedicated games that I've sold have been because I can play them in MAME and didn't play them much in the first place. If I had unlimited spade I would definitely have over 100 vids but I have to maximize my enjoyment per square foot and there are very few vids that make the cut against the best pins.

Many of the vids I own just can't be properly emulated, due to the unique controls - stuff like Paperboy, BZ, Toobin..many of those and some others can't really be emulated properly period - vector stuff, etc..

Some vids can be emulated fine. No offense to anyone, but I'd be just fine playing UN Squadron, Altered Beast and a lot of the JAMMA joytick/buttons games in emulation.

Pins can't be emulated at all. Sure, there's pinmame and all, but since it wasn't video to begin with, it's not the same.

I currently have around 20 vids and 2 pins... I'd like to up that to 4 pins, but that is about the max I'd own. Ideally I'd have 1 EM, 1 SS, 1 later SS, and 1 DMD...

I think about 1:5 feels right. And let me tell you, those pins will get more play than all the vids combined. Pins flat out rock. But, I love vids too.

Pins are not more work! All I do is fix frickin monitors! Pin maintenance is simple and mostly common sense!

I am sitting at a 12:2 ratio. It wont be like that for long, as Firepower is being sold on Sunday.

Some will say vids are easier to fix while others will say pins are easier to fix.
game play. A sluggish pin is no fun. There truly is no way in hell that pins are easier to fix. There are WAY more moving parts to a pin than a vid. If you buy a pin it may work but you'll find hardware worn out such as links, pawls, and especially coil sleeves causing slow game play. Then you deal with rebuilding flippers .... geez the list seems to go on and on when it comes to pins.

But let me say this - it's well worth the headache! Once you get the pin spruced up there is nothing better than pins. You'll slowly start seeing your vids go out the door and replaced by pins. Maybe not all but most ;)

Like I said. If you're buying good condition shopped out pins then maintenance should be pretty straight forward. If you had purchased restored games with rebuilt monitors the same would be true of the vids. Over the life of the machine pins will require far more work. That's undeniable.
