IC Heat-sinks on Galaxian PCB

What adhesive is used to apply these?

The originals look like they were tacked on with cyanoacrylate, but I use epoxy (JB Weld actually) to put them back on. Any thermal epoxy will work fine (don't waste your money on the best out there... it's not needed here).

Yeah +1 x2, on what Matt said....just a fancy word for super glue. Yes im pretty sure thats what they used at the factory. I use JB weld also. Really its a bit of an overkill to use heatsinks on the 2125 rams. Yes they run warm but its a fairly indestructible chip.

Hi all,

I just ordered some heatsinks and thermal glue to put on my board (recommended to try to track down intermittent sound loss after the game warms up). Does anyone have any leads (or pics) as to which chips actually get them?

Heatsink I bought:

Thermal glue I bought:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/152190598309?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

The theory is that the sound chips/ram are heating up and causing the sound loss.

Thanks in advance!

Jason

Who's recommendation/theory?
The chips discussed in this thread are video RAM.
The audio amp should already have a large heatsink on it (soldered to the board, so it doesn't come off easily).

Thanks for responding Matt, it was a viewer on the channel. LOL.

A comment on your YouTube channel? Well, there's certainly no shortage of bad advice on YouTube.... :D
Not that there isn't some bad tech advice here occasionally as well. But hopefully tech questions and answers here get scrutinized more, and the audience is larger and better versed in the subject matter. So you might do better to start your own tech repair thread here for your sound problem.

No harm in putting those heatsinks on your video RAM anyway. Some may argue that they're really not needed (particularly in a home environment), but they're cheap insurance and easy to put on.

Any idea if there are only 5 to put on? Anyone have a pic of theirs installed?

Thanks in advance!

Jason

The pics that I attached were from the guy that put them on there in his repair blog, but it only showed a portion of the PCB.

However, was wondering if there were any additional ones on the board that I should put them on? Thanks for confirming only 5. Will work on this tonight.

Also, I'll be sure to start a new thread with the other sound issue.

Thanks all!

Jason

Midway only put heatsinks on those chips. No others. I've worked on boards with them missing, partially missing, and fully there. I've never had any reliability problems wither way... however, for their generation of tech, they do run on the hot side. (Not like a pentium 4 with no cpu cooler on it though :) ).

If you want to follow how Midway did it, apply your heatsinks to those same chips from that pic, and no more.
