I wonder why my basement was flooding!!

Tree roots growing though your drain tile finding their way into the sump pit and snarling up the impellers of the pump :(
 
thast aint roots man those are leaves and seeds aka the things that fall off the trees ...how the eff they got to your sump pump is beyond me...

Yeah, you can see the whirligig maple seeds sticking out on the left side.

Its all in there because my driveway goes down hill below level and the garage is part of the basement. There is a drain at the end of the driveway and the mesh screen filter under the drain was never replaced and all kinds of objects got in the drain and sucked in the sump. I replaced the mesh filter and took a shop vac and vacuumed all the sludge, leaves and such in the sump and in the drain, now the pump works great.

I suppose that my sump pump is about to get a workout. They are forecasting that we will be getting anywhere between 4 to 8 inches of rain per day for the next several days. Nothing like having to worry about water in your basement...
