Hi everyone... I know that I don't participate in the forums often mainly because I have only one arcade game compared to the vast amount you all have... but I would like to share with you this historic day.

You see, I was one of the early adopters of the PS3... meaning basically that I have an original "fat" 60 GB unit that has PS2 backwards compatibility, four USB ports and the Chrome. Aside from that, there is one more thing unique about my unit: I haven't updated it in five years!

That's right, I'm still running firmware version 2.36. I used to do weekly updates on it as required, but the day 2.37 came out, I had what you might call a premonition that I just shouldn't update; and as some of you may recall that's when the whole "bricking debacle" started.

Everything on the unit works fine still, but recently there have been games released on the PSN that I have wanted to try; like Turtles In Time ReShelled, and SSF2 Turbo HD.

I had convinced myself that these games aren't worth risking my console for, and the ability to run Linux on it is nice. However, the catalyst for me was when I was recently given some new Blu-Ray movies as a gift; one of which being the Tron Legacy 5 Disc collectible which I was almost salivating to watch in 3D.

I excitedly pop it into my PS3 and receive the following message:

To play this BD, you must renew the encryption key. Perform a system software update to renew the encryption key

So I have come to the realization that the longer I do not update, the more my PS3 becomes a $600 paper-weight. And although playing PS2 Tekken Tag tournament is nice, it won't last forever.

So I have come to the conclusion that today is the day I will finally reconnect my unit to the internet and go "all-in" on the latest software update

If it works, I have a bunch of new games and movies to enjoy! And if it doesn't, you'll find the games and movies on eBay shortly! ;)

Someone suggested that I could sell the unit as a bundle, but nobody would pay the price I would have to ask for to recoup the $$$ I've dumped into it with accessories and stuff.

So here goes...

I have the same unit, always updated it and never had an issue... I think the Internet vastly blew that whole thing out of proportion.

Almost an hour later and no new post, so I assume you're enjoying your TRON disc!

Bah! All I have is a marquee and a manual!

I got the same unit and never had a problem with an update
I did have to replace the drive and I also upgraded the harddrive

Just do not shut it off while updating!!!!

If I didn't already have a PS2, I'd consider owning two PS3s just to play PS2 games.

Update

Update

Okay, so it's still alive!

I took some time to re-familiarize myself with the new options, and also to register a new PSN account since I no longer even have the e-mail address I used to sign-up for the old one, and I saw no way to update my details.

All I can say is thank God it didn't brick and now I am browsing the PSN store looking for new games to download! :D

(p.s. Tron Legacy 3D is stunning!)

Edit: Anyone care to share what the "Create Video" option is for? I'm guessing it's some kind of PS3 Eye gizmo, but if we could record in-game footage, that would be nifty.

Games I downloaded so far...

Super Stardust HD (loved the original on the Amiga)

Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix (obviously a classic SF fan)

and I couldn't find TMNT ReShelled, so I looked around some more in the store and saw a game called:

Tank Battles, and it reminded me instantly of Combat for the Atari 2600 and it's a blast! Especially online. :)

I'm having a ball tonight!

I was just talking to my brother-in-law about not being able to find someone who did not update the 60GB system and how badly I wanted one...sad day. I have a 60GB system that has the upgraded 500GB HDD but it was updated prior to my purchase of it. I guess the search will continue...

Well, if I had sold it, I would've sold it as a bundle for probably somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,200 on ebay. I think you can still find some un-upgraded ones there.

Just be careful that they are still working!

Out of curiousity, are you looking for non-upgraded ones for Linux use? Because I can tell you from experience that the performance is not great... I mean you can run some basic emulators on it and do some word processing, but don't expect it to run Crysis, not even close to it! Also I know one friend who bricked his system by installing Linux (couldn't boot into Linux and couldn't get back into Game-OS either)

As an aside, I did manage to save the 2.36 firmware to my computer, kind of as a memorial, before updating... If you're good at hacking/modding, you might be able to use it to downgrade another 60GB fat model.

I want going to dabble in the Linux but it's probably better that I stick to regular computers. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, definatley play with Linux on a regular PC --maybe even the Live CD's that don't require any install.

With a regular PC you'll get much better performane than with the PS3, and if it fouls-up your PC, you can at least re-install another OS, where as if it fouls-up your PS3 you could be out of your game console permanently!
