So, I won an auction on a machine in Milwaukee, and I already made a newbie mistake. I had decided to figure out the pickup situation later. Well, it's not figuring out. I paid $100 for this cab; ideally I'd like to spend less than that moving it the 100 miles to my house.

Well, I guess I figured U-Haul to be a bit, eh, cheaper than $150 for this move. There's other rental companies around, but they're all even more expensive. So there's gotta be that one friend with a big car, right? Well, I haven't found him yet. And my flat, trashy sedan can't carry anything of size.

I dun goof'd. Help?

Trailer hitch on the car? if so only $15 to rent a trailer at U-haul

Unfortunately no :( if I can find someone with a trailer hitch I'll go with that.

I have a lead on two different minivans, and I have another guy to message yet; we'll see how this pans out.

I'd spend the $100 to add a trailer hitch on your car
and then rent a trailer when you need to pickup games.
What happens in 3-4 weeks when you want another?

Rent a mini-van from budget or thrifty. Going to be way cheaper or rent a cargo van.

A 1 day rental on a mini van should be like 50 bucks.

I had a similar problem. I have had 4 Cabs now, and I do not have a truck either. I am lucky enough that my grandpa has a truck I can steal every now and then, but this last cab I got, I couldn't use it because he was out of town with the truck. I asked one of my cousins to help he said he would, but then realized that he never drives the truck and his tags were expired! (This of course being the day before the pickup) I desperately posted on facebook that I needed someone with a truck to drive me 80 miles to pick up a cab. One of my other cousins hit me up and said he would help. I gave him one of my empty cabs and paid for gas. :)

Yeah a pickup truck is the way to go.

This is my game hauler

I wasted a ton of money early on with Budget and Enterprise renting cargo vans. Although even a cargo van cant be much more than 100 bucks.

Whats the game you are picking up? I have fit Donkey Kong and a couple pinball machines inside a Ford Edge.

Pickup trucks from Avis of Budget. They are about $50-60 per day. They get way better gas mileage than UHaul. They are much more comfortable. And they are unlimited mileage. That is where UHaul makes their cash. Last time I rented one it was almost $1 a mile.

What did you win?

I have no pick up truck nor means to move games, but here is how I got my various games...

Capcom Bowling (no longer have) former employee
Time Killers (no longer have) hired a guy at the auction to move them
Point Blank same auction (the guy I hired don't hire him PM me if you like)
Primal Rage had it shipped
MK4 cousin with pick up helped
Killer Instinct cousin again
Golden Tee (had it delivered by the seller...thanks again Jeff
PC-10 a friend/fellow KLOVer was kind enough to use his van...thanks again Jay!

If you have no means...make friends :)

just for future reference...you can fit a Super Pac Man cab inside a Ford Escape...no problem lol.

I have a full size 1997 2 door full size Tahoe Blazer that I use to pick up single games with...there is a hitch on the back if i need it...i like it because seems like every time i get a game its raining and i just park it and wait until it quits raining to unload it...no worries about getting games wet. I have fit a NFL Blitz '99 in it no problem...pretty good sized game. I got a UHAUL trailer locally for $39 and it was a 6x12 enclosed...hauled 5 games back from a trip to DC..but it was fun getting them all in there...lol.

He must have won the games from lostwonders auction or the one in Kenosha.
I asked the guy before I even thought about bidding if he delivered. He hurt his back and said he was unable to do so.

So I called up a friend of mine to see if he could help me move it if I decided to plunge on the cab. I changed my mind anyways since I didn't feel the cab was worth $100. Really would of went after that WoW if I had the extra cash and room. *sigh* another downfall of this hobby.

Why is U-Haul $150? You didn't TELL them you're driving 150 miles to pick something up did you? Simply go in and rent a U-Haul for a day... they'll consider it a LOCAL MOVE... then go get your game. "Local" rentals have unlimited mileage. The U-Haul should be no more than $30-$40 at best.

"Local" rentals have unlimited mileage.

Huh? In what alternate reality will U-Haul give you unlimited miles? It's a low fee of $20 or so for the truck, then 59 cents a mile. (79 cents on the big stuff). So, it's only cheaper if it's truly a local rental, and you won't have to go more than 40 miles or so.

Trailers have unlimited miles, however, especially considering they don't have odometers... :D

But to pick up only one game, you don't need a large truck. Just rent a minivan or a small pickup from a car rental place. Or, consider that now is as good a time as any to buy a trailer hitch for your car.

Hmmm... maybe I'm getting my trailer/truck local/LD mixed up somewhere along the times...i've not rented a local U-Haul non-trailer in a while now...

I think you're right actually ...thinking on it... the trailer is a flat fee daily.

The Budget Rent-A-Truck is a good idea... or if local enough Home Depot.
