I should have known myself better than to buy a cabinet to convert.

My Galaga cab has Galaga '88 in it right now via a cabinet adapter (ie. completely reversible) since my Galaga board is broken. Is very tempted to put one of Clay's jamma board switchers in there and put Galaxian, Galaga, Galaga '88, and possibly Mappy in it! Galaga '88 in mono isn't as cool as stereo, but I wouldn't want to modify the Galaga cab at all.

I don't know if this cabinet is worth restoring, I see Galaxians complete and nice selling for $100-$200 so it is hard to spend the money on side art. I might just do the custom Galaga '88 art on this cabinet and pick up a nice Galaxian for cheap.

This makes me want to go and restore the cabs I have that need work.

The wood on that cab looks nice.
I say stain it and just put your custom side art on it.lol. It would be different.

Yes the wood is too nice to put vinyl or paint, this will be stained with ebony and black light responsive purple stain. I need to do some tests first.

If I don't like it I can put vinyl over top of that. More of an experiment.

Flipside

First spread a coat of Citristrip

While the vinyl is still softened by the citristrip and acetone, peel off the vinyl going with the grain of the wood.

I would have to agree, that actually looks really nice. Just stain it and apply side art! :p

Dude, you love acetone. Nice work!

Why wouldn't I? Acetone has never let me down. :)

I am looking to stain it with Purple blacklight dye I found. It is oil soluble so it should work.

I was thinking the outside purple and the inside monitor area ebony.

Hopefully the wood grain will light up under the black light with this dye.

This morning the Citristrip is still doing its work. I will strip it tonight or tomorrow morning:

Then I will have to do the inside area sides.

good luck to you! I just stripped my big blue cab with citri strip, it didnt work in the way I wanted it to, must have been the paint that was used, which was thick and about 2-3 layers.. I had to let it soak and then I had to use a razer blade clamped in a pair of vice grips and it didnt scratch any of the blue! LOL yours seems to be peeling nice though

It isn't just the citristrip, that just removes the paint, you have to use acetone to soften the vinyl and adhesive after you remove the paint.

Awesome thread Tighe! If I ever get around the courage to restore my cabinets, I'm using this thread as a reference!

I like it how you have wheels on the bottom of your cabinet. I'm very seriously considering doing that to mine as well!
