I should have known myself better than to buy a cabinet to convert.

Sideart is a lost cause

So now the question is, do I strip the vinyl off and paint then new vinyl, or sand smooth, paint and apply new vinyl?

I say your best bet would be to peel off the vinyl down to bare wood and then paint. I would bet that you would have the least adhesion issues with that.

It sucks that you couldn't save the artwork, but that is about how I expected it would go.

I was thinking the same thing. SRS what did you do?

My original plan was to remove the original vinyl, clean up the surface with acetone, then apply the new art.

Unfortunately, once I got the original vinyl off, I realized that the surface wasn't smooth enough for the new artwork. The old vinyl that came off was super thick and tough as all hell. The new stuff was a lot thinner and would definitely not hide the surface defects that the old stuff covered up.

I actually sanded the sides down, found a couple of low spots, filled them in, sanded smooth again, applied primer and paint, then put the new art on.

depends on the condition of the vinyl from what i've read on other resto's. check out the resto section i was checking out the MK resto's and the simpsons ones there's some great info in there.

Yah but the Simpsons and MK vinyl is completely different. The art is infused in the vinyl and the vinyl is smooth. Galaxian vinyl is textured and the art is almost printed on.

ah, i'd say prolly pull it... i don't know beans about this end of the resto section yet, learn something new every day :D

hopefully things pan out this weekend tho and i can change that :D

Well when I painted my Simpsons cabinet the side that left the vinyl on looks smoother. The stripped side has almost what looks like leather texture. I only put 3 coats of paint and bondo on that side. The other side I floated wall plaster between the 2nd and 3rd coats. It is very smooth.

Need measurements/photo:

OK this cabinet is in great shape, but the monitor mount bracket on the right is cut. Can anyone tell me what this looked like originally? Dimensions? Also is there a way to tell if this Galaxian was a 25" cabinet version?

Man that sucks your art got destroyed. I don't know how they did that Galaxian art, but if you breathe on it heavy it falls on the floor. Looks pretty good though if you get one with most of it still on there.

LOL I had this plugged into my CPS2 cabinet yesterday and was playing it sideways and you I think I noticed stereo sound.

Is '88 Stereo? Then yes.

Yes, has a jumper for stereo/mono I think or possibly it's mono over the jamma connector and there is a separate connector for stereo that you'll have to hook into.

I really love it in stereo since the audio is so great. Mine gets played in mono for now unfortunately since I either put it in a Galaga cab with a cabinet->jamma adapter or in a Double Dragon cabinet.

Great game!
