I, Robot #158 Restoration

Don't lose your head....

I Robot is being stripped down more and more. Soon it will have a head transplant, and I can proceed with that, while I figure out if the original headbox is salvageable.

Hmmm.... Was it just the 4 bolts? Mine has issues beyond that, I may have to try again.... use a bigger hammer.................

Yes, just four bolts for the head box on I Robot/MH/Firefox. I don't know about Jedi.

Look what came in the mail today! It's an empty Firefox!

Awesome! I just saw your post, you got this! , it can be done, about a year ago I found a dedicated Major Havoc converted to a Toobin, same type of condition and parts wise as your I Robot, its worth it , youll be super satisfied once you finish it!

I remember that find! Insane story. I'd love to find a major havoc cabinet at some point as well. Even a repro.

It's funny, I have the exact opposite situation there as with the I robot. All the parts for a havoc, but no dedicated cabinet, vs. A near complete I robot cabinet, but no parts!

Guess I gotta make a new pair of bezels for both cabs. At least I have a template bezel!
I wonder where I can get this same glossy material. The only other time I've made a bezel I used matte framing board.

I think the OEM process was actually black printed on std stock. On some games they have the part # printed in a white box on it. Well, the white is the card stock anyway.

I was going to try spray painting some white stock to see what I ended up with. Just for giggles anyway.

Maybe model that in fusion 360 if you can? Or make extras? I know i could use one.

So...

Good news, I was able to get the head off of the Firefox cab and mount it to the I Robot Cab!

The bad news however:

Someone must have epoxied or crazy glued the head box to the base on the firefox cabinet, because it did NOT want to come off. I ended up having to use a floor jack in order to pry it off. The base took a good chunk of the headbox with it. I was totally blindsided by this: There was no glue at all on the I Robot. Someone must have done that after the fact, I imagine. Weird. Nothing wood filler can't solve, but still, I'm disappointed in both myself... And the cabinet.

Shit happens I guess. Hail to wood filler. Hail to bondo. Hail to the belt sander. I can see the future and it is those tools three.

Both wood filler and bondo are not designed to be applied in situations where it's this big of a blob. Yea, I get it that it will be under the head but it's just going to crack and chip out eventually.

Best bet would be to replace the base piece, or alternately use a router to slowly move left like a line printer and cut it down to an even uniform depth. Then glue in a plank. The fit could be sloppy and then you could use filler/bondo to clean up the gaps.

Hmmmmmm....... This what I was referencing. I took all the bolts out and the head would not budge. even after a couple of big rubber hammer strikes...... I eventually let it be. It was a Firefox cab also.

leads me to think this is a Firefox thing, unless anyone has experiences to the contrary.

I'm not about to try on my nice Firefox to find out!

Heavens! nor was I asking you to. :) I was fishing for others that may have experienced it. Until now, I was like you, I thought it was done after the fact.... otherwise, what was the point of the bolts?

This project has hope.

A couple critical pieces have arrived! We've got a PCB, a Joystick, and a Disco Monitor!

All that's needed is now a PSU and a control panel really.

Unfortunately I have to wait a bit before I buy anything else because I made another very special purchase that coupled with the I R PCB has nuked my arcade funds lol. But I'm very happy that now I see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Happened upon another headbox for I, Robot in better condition than the FireFox one. So both games get nice-ish headboxes! Yay!

But before I start building anything, out to the paint shed they went to get a sanding and a fresh coat of paint....

1- coca cola in a spray bottle with just a squirt of dish cleans and removes damage (rust grime enamel :) from pretty much anything.

2- that shot of your lawn framed through a burnt husked cabinet HITS 👌👌👌

After a sand and paint, both headboxes are back inside! Looks much nicer now. You can tell by the plastic on the floor that I have used a TON of black paint in this shed, lol.

I think the Ears for both cabs may also need some touch ups. I've got a coworker who has offered to powder coat some things for me, but I think they're too large, so they'll probably get the traditional rustoleum satin-black treatment as well. Just need to get more spray paint.

I bet the local hardware store loves me.
