Here it is. On a tron spinner when you spin the knob to the right or to the left the arm and the turret spin clockwise. It doesn't matter which way you spin it it goes clockwise.

Where do you guys think is the best place to start other than connections. I don't think it is the optic or spinner because it works. Just not right.

thanks allen

most likely its the opto board.
If you go into test mode, player input and turn the spinner slowly, the values should count up by 1s to 127 (or from 127 to 0), or something thereabouts.
At any rate, if it goes all the way to 127 and 0 then the pcb is working as it should, there's something wrong on the encoder board, either the counter chip isn't changing directions properly or one half of the opto is bad, making it only count in one direction.

I vote its the optical sensor. could also be the comparator, but I think its much more likely its the optical driver. Make sure the sensor is clean also.

In a reach around my butt to scratch my ear way. You understand." either the counter chip isn't changing directions properly" that explains what is going on.

I will try the test mode and see. For what I have so far thanks guys I just needed a place to start.

And the testing continues

Ok I put it in test mode. None of the test said anything about the spinner. The 0-127 went up never down.
If you move it to the right it goes 1-2-3 and then if you go back left it goes 4-5-6 and so on.
I did not bring home my meter so I couldn't get any readings.

I see an led on the outside board 1 of 3 is it supposed to lite up?

Also the 2 pots on the power supply I'm guessing they adjust the output, but which one does what?

Also I got an error on the sound(sound board interface error)
An early thank you for HELP.

Ok on the test dip#1 the led is solid yellow.

with dip #2 the led is off.

Anybody do repairs on encoder boards or want to sell one.

Found a post per Todd Tuckey saying the solid yellow led is sound problem.
Game plays fine except the issue with the spinner and no sound.
Could it be a power issue that needs checking?
thanks allen

Lets see I checked connections, power, ground, and looked the boards over nothing stands out.
I did notice a newer chip on the sound board.
Also see some of the 2764 have home made labels Tron pro and some of them just Tron.

I'm getting amp noise when I unplug and reconnect both sides of the amp board.

Also get the same plugging and unplugging from sound board.

Still no sound.

Any ideas where to got next???

Allen

I still could use some input, but found this out.
I used a signal gen and sent a signal to the input side of the dual amp so that checks out good.

I see 2 sound chips is there anything special about them. Are they standard or specific to each type board.

Thanks Allen

Not to derail the direction you're going, but I ran into this issue of the spinner only turning the arm/turret one way regardless of the way you turned the spinner. In my case, one of the screws that mounts the board was not there and the board had moved a bit. Once I re-centered it and added a screw to hold it in place, it started working both ways. Probably not what you've got going on, but I thought I'd throw it out there as it's an easy thing to look at.

Any help is welcome. All of the screws are there. I even centered the metal disc.
It seems to me on the optic encoder optic or 1 of the 2 chips or both.

On the sound everything seems good. Must be a chip or so there.

Double checked power, ground, connections, swapped around ribbon cables to see if another problem pops up.
same issues. Also reseated chips on ssio.
I guess next is to find some Z80s and the 2 chips in this pic.

Just ordered a bunch of stuff from Bob Roberts.
I guess I'm done with this for about a week.

Will keep checking back to see if anyone has any input until I get this stuff.

If the 2 sound chips are labeled "AY-3-8910", they're pretty common. Lots of early 80's games used them. (couldn't tell from the pic if that's what they were, but I know Tron uses 2 of them)

I think that is what they are so I ordered some.

Thanks for input. Everything helps.

I recently heard that switching out the ribbon cables on the PCB will resolve this. Hopefully that's one of the things you ordered.

Good luck!

NO I ordered parts from 4 places because no one had everything and to be honest by the time I found the stuff I did order I forgot about the cables. Besides I'm gonna be t shooting some ZK boards and won't have time to play around with my stuff until after Christmas. Thanks for the heads up though.

I hope someone can add to this with helpful info.
I bought a supposed to be working spinner swapped that out same problem.
As for the sound issue I swapped out the 2 sound chips and the z80 with new ones.
I have another dual amp board on the way. The test that I have done lead me else where.

Any ideas?
Thanks Allen
