I Pushed My Luck with CPS2 Battery on My Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo

My Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo battery just died out on me today. I just purchased it recently with the original battery and in the process of replacing it. Ordered the Keystone Battery Holder last night so I decided to open it up before the kit come home sometime this week. I opened it apart and saw it was on the original battery. When I put it back, all I see is a blank blue screen. I know I'm screwed as I was playing Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter with my daughter before open the SSF2T and put it back. I guessed the battery was going to die anyway after all these years and the only reason it was still working was because of being plug to the arcade machine. Once I took it out, I guessed the battery died and basically going on a suicide mode. Now I have a dead Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. I'm so mad at myself as I love this game and wanted to be on factory condition with original hardware, not Phoenix. I should of wait until the Keystone battery holder come home before I open the CPS2.

Visit the cps2 shock page. It is possible to revive it to factory and not phoenix it.

Yeah, don't fear. I think noaffinity here does it. Basically it's the Eduardo Cruz method of tapping into the cpu to bypass the encryption. So you can use the same roms and everything

That is great news as I thought I have to phoenix it. My Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter is Phoenix. There's nothing wrong with it but I prefer running on original hardware and that was one of the reason why I paid $400 for this game (A and B boards). Thank you everyone for helping out. This forum is awesome for noobie like me.

Learning moment for me - What does it mean to "Phoenix It"?

I have an original Punisher. I should probably get this taken care of.

With regards to CPS2, to "Phoenix It" means to load custom ROM data instead of original code in order to bypass the encryption scheme in CPS2. The game will have additional menus and a Phoenix Logo upon boot-up. With regards to playing the game, it's not really anything you will notice. With regards to "original" hardware/code, it is anything but original.

Once it was determined how Capcom went about reloading the encryption keys, if you are seeking to run original, OG hardware, there is no reason to use the Razoola Phoenix ROMs any longer.

before you give up on it.....I did a battery switch on my Marvel Super Heroes, thought it suicided too, but turned out when I re-cased the A board, for whatever reason, it won't seat into the B board well enough to make a connection. When i seat it uncased, it works great. I was getting just a red screen...swore it was dead too. Won't hurt to try before you get into the fix.

Slow your roll, homey. Having the game powered on does not charge the battery.

What dc voltage is the old battery currently at?

Are the boards fully seated? Any bent pins between the boards?

Wait,.. this happen to me when I bought one,.. I put the new battery in and Blue screen.. I thought I killed it, had it Phoenixed and put it back in to the same blue screen... The problem was the Fan on the A board. Once I loosened it up from the b board it was all crusty and nasty. Once I hang cleaned the fan and assembly area put in the pheonixed board in it worked. I am sure when i changed the battery I would have been ok if the A board fan was cleaned. My noob mistake cost me an unmolested marvel vs SF but it might be ok for you still. Try and clean the fan.

Thank you all for the tips. I'll give it one last try before sending them out to Chris to do the de-suicide service and doing the keystone battery holder also. Since I already removed the case for shipping, I'll put it directly into the "A" board to see if there's any life left on the original battery.

Mtnyeti, thank you all so much for helping. Since mine was all open up ready to ship to Chris for de-suicide service on my SSF2T, I tried it one more time just like you mentioned and it work. I am so freakin happy because I wanted an original board and paid more for it too. This is one of my favorite Street Fighter, Alpha 2 is my second. Anyhow, thank you all so much for helping out. Now I'm going to keep it in the cabinet until my Keystone Battery Holder come home sometime this week. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

Glad it worked out for you. I think my heart fell through to my feet when I thought I killed mine. To which,.. I then Killed later... At least you were able to get yours to work before that.

I have to ask, though, why do you want a keystone mod if you're adamant on keeping it in "factory condition with original hardware"?
