I've always liked tron. I always wonder what people who say it sucks dislike about it? Does it bore people to the point they don't care to play it or is it too hard so they dislike the fact that the game kicked their ass?
I wouldn't say it sucks, but I don't think its gameplay equals the beauty of its cabinet.
The main problem is that the movie used very common game themes of the time, so Bally was kind of trapped into trying to take ideas that were already common and putting a fresh spin on them. What kid of the time didn't already recognize three of the levels as Combat, Breakout and Surround (or Snake, Worms, Nibbler, or any other of 20 variants depending on what computer/console you had)?
The spinner added freshness to the MCP cone and tank levels, but the Light Cycles is the level where the game really falls flat for me. It was a key part of the movie, but Surround was a game that I already rejected as a 2600 owning kid.
Like others have said, flightstick style games kill my wrist after a pretty short time. Dedicated Gorf does the same thing, but it might just be because I'm not playing games with that stick on a regular basis.
Would I love to have a Tron? In a second! I think its the most beautiful cabinet ever made. I'd also love to have a Journey, even though I think the both the band and the game are atrocious. The game transcends itself!
