The guy I got it from (rue on here)
got some of the paint off and we can see nice joust art underneath.

What is the best way to get this paint off without ruining the art underneath?

It depends on the type of paint. If it cheap latex, a heat gun will soften it and you can frequently peel big slabs of it off. If it is an enamel. Then GoofOff can sometimes take it off carefully.

If it is enamel, don't use a paint stripper. I have yet to find one that is mild enough (I've tried three different "Citrus" types and 2 "organic" types) and they all go thorugh and mess up the original paint.

I haven't tried a heat gun on enamel, but that is next on my list to try.

Im going through the same thing... somebody gave me a Ms. Pac-Man cabinet that was painted black with a roller... Let me know what works out for you

There is probably a good chance that there's a reason it was painted... if it's worth your time to find out, then good luck with getting the paint off, a friend of mine used GoofOff with great success (he could see the KI sticker underneath was in good shape), but in the end, it'll probably save you a lot of headaches just to sand it and re stencil it. I have a Robotron that's more on less the same as your Joust, I haven't bothered stripped the black paint off because I know, that in the end... I'll just want to restencil it. Even found the stencils I want to use already (EU Robotron stencils modified for US cabinets).

Just saying, but anyways, good luck with the strip. I'm curious as to how it looks under there.

sometimes you can use a mild solvent like goof off (too much is not mild of course) .. just dampen a towel with the goof off and wipe the cab down, then put duct tape on top of it when it's not wet anymore.. then just rip the duct tape off and hopefully it takes the top layer of paint with it and leaves the original below. Williams cabs strip like this better because of the clear coat they have that pac man/ms pac man do not making them almost impossible to save once painted.
