I never thought a console gaming system could ever tear me away from my arcade....

I've seen it but never really looked into it. I gotta say it looks really cool.

So what are the good games for this platform? I see star castle, cosmic chasm, berzerk, star trek..

What games have overlays? Where can I find all these homebrew games
people are talking about?

I might have to pick one of these up.

I have one as well. You have to play one to "get it". The really crisp and clear vectors on a tiny tube is really, really cool. Only downfall is the audio feedback issue. My controller's first button is also non-responsive now days. :(

I could have sworn there was either a hack or a multi-cart that allowed you to play roms of arcade vector games on it. It was during the late 90's to early 2K's that I saw it. Never heard it mentioned again.

You can always hunt down one of seven made Original Mini-Cade's by ESI !

Like I said, getting one didn't really interest me until recently and am so glad I did! I like even the less popular games ( spike, solar quest, blitz, and clean sweep ) because the gameplay is so unique. Think of it as a place where arcade meets console!

Got 2 Vecs, worth what I traded for them back in the late 90's. (No. Both are keepers. Don't ask, please.)
If you've come to the SC3 meets, that's one of mine you've played, and Mitch's Multi.
Get.
A.
Multicart!
It lets you focus on playing instead of the mania that comes with collecting, and many of them now come with several homebrews and a screen based menu program to make choosing easier.
Repro overlays are available, they aren't the chore they used to be in obtaining.

Fun plays:
Scramble and Berzerk are comparatively easy hunts for the Multi impaired, and Berzerk has a slowdown point that's fun to play with. See if you can induce the speedup glitch for near-impossible play.

Spike! is good if just for the in-cart speech for laughs.

Spacewar! is the 2-player fun secret. Watch as your opponent runs out of fuel, then you go in for the kill.

Bedlam is Tempest inside out, and almost as fun.

Star Trek is not a port of the Star Trek:SOS, it's a different game that licensed the name.

Here's a little update.....those of you who are the hunt for one, there seems to be quite a few popping up on eBay.and some are quite reasonable. See if you can win one with some games included. It will bring you more for your dollar. And FYI , web wars and fortress of narzod are must gets!!!!!

What's a reasonable price to expect to pay for a Vectrex with 2 controllers and 6 - 8 games (with overlays)? I just started looking into these, so haven't got a good read on the value .. $200? $300?

Depending on the games and the condition of the overlays, I would say you're looking at about 250.00.

cosmic chasm is good on the vectrex, but the arcade game is better..

ebay the game unit.. For $100 you should be able to get the game unit and an extra controller..

Bob roberts sell a rebuild cap kit for $15.00

I found a Vectrex at a garage sale recently for $1 (they though it was a BW TV) - that's how I got my second controller - but the question I have since the one I got at the garage sale has no deflection (spot in the middle) - would the Bob Roberts kit maybe address that?

It would be worth capping if I could get a backup system out of it.

Oh, and Armor Attack DEFINITELY rocks with the overlay. Practically arcade quality...

If you disassemble the pad and run a pencil eraser across all the button contacts you may be able to get that button back to working; when I got mine none of the buttons worked - but that cleared it right up for me...

It depends on the games... Here is my guess:

$75- $125 for the game unit (2x if in the box)
$50 for the 2nd controller (2x if in the box)

games are worth $10-$75. go 1.5x if they have the overlay and manual. go 2x-3x if they have the box.

light pen is worth about $50(you don't need it)
3d imager is worth $250-$1k (if boxed)
carry case is hard to find. figure $100-$150

if you must have the overlays, then its going to get expensive.. If you can live without them then get the multicart.

I was all hopped up on the overlays too. Yes some games are necessary ( armor attack, spin ball ) but the reality is I'm not gonna change an overlay every time I switch games. I love playing the games. If you're not over the top about cib games I say enjoy! And I don't care what kind of collector you are....you MUST pick up vector pilot! Insanely awesome and well done! A game that truly shows off what vectrex is capable of!!!!
