I need some help with my pin.

thanks for the encouragement, it really is in nice shape and i love having/playing it. I really dont want to get rid of it, the guy i bought it from replaced some bulbs with led's waxed the pf all new rubbers and balls. also gave me 5 new extra balls 2 packs of bulbs and a bunch of new/extra rubbers. im gonna do all i can to fix/get it fixed im just SUPER frustraded, like i cant see the light at the end of the tunnell

O.K. i got the u2 rom in and put it in and nothing. the playfeild lights up and the green led's (1 on each board) light up but thats it. ive checked all the fuses, all good it wont "boot" all the way up. any suggestions?

Don't give up yet, really.

Pay attention to the LED on the MPU board when you turn the machine on. You say it "lights up". That little LED is trying to tell you something, as that is the basic diagnostic tool for your MPU board.

A good working MPU board should show 7 flashes of the LED while it is in the process of booting (might be a small delay between the first couple flashes). The LED flashing is confirmation of various system tests the CPU is performing during the boot process. Once the bootup process is complete and all 7 flashes have occurred, the CPU is "booted" and the LED should remain lit. (but the game should also be in attract mode at that point, and sounds like yours isn't making it)

So, need to know *exactly* ( count several times if not sure).....how many times does the LED flash when you power up the machine? Once we know that we can start narrowing down potential problem areas. And if you are getting 7 good flashes then a lit LED - we know it's not the MPU. (and if that's the case I'd start poking around in your trough switches again - because a game won't start if a ball is missing - and you were having some problems there before..not that you have a ball missing (right?), but maybe a trough switch isn't registering.)

Don't give up, you'll get it fixed. Heavy Metal Meltdown's are somewhat rare, I don't see them much. Did you make sure that ROM was installed right? What about that leg you broke off? It's not still stuck in there is it?

Relax bro, we'll help you get it sorted out. Double check everything including connectors and be sure to leave the pin on long enough to finish booting up, afterwards let us know what it does i.e. general illumination works but game is otherwise dead.

so i bought this pin, heavy metal meltdown and i dont know much about them. when i bought it everything worked fine, shortly after i got it i had to order a new coil for the right flipper (i went ahead and replaced both) everything good again. well the multiball started acting up, i checked the switch on the ramp and was good so i call the guy i got it from he suggested reseating the roms on the boards behind the back glass so i begin. WELL i broke one of the legs/pins off of one of the roms!! i dont know what to do, im really frustrated now my pin does nothing. anyone know where i can get another one? i dont know the name of it but i snap a couple photos if anyone can help that would be great.

You got this from Adam off of CL right? Adam is very good people and would never intentionally rip someone off. He knows his stuff well too. Here is a listing of your particular game- http://pinlistings.com/index.php?op...=display&view=details&id=61&catid=18&Itemid=3

That game is pretty hard to find and in the shape yours is in, you should have little problem getting your money back on it (once it is working again).

You will find with pinballs especially, you look at them wrong and they stop working....Sort of exaggerating, but typically moving a pinball from one location to another will cause a machine to not function 100%.

I would recommend taking a look at Clay's guide to get an understanding of how this system works and what you need to do to get it running. While Clays is no longer available, there are many places to get a copy, if you cant get one, contact me and I will send you a PDF for your game.

Also, where did you get the rom from? You want to make sure it is correctly orientated. Also, you want to make sure it is from someone reputable. If you want another rom to try out free of charge, contact me and I will send you one. Again, Adam does a lot for pinball and does know his stuff. he has helped me out up here in WI keeping games running at the MGC, and I would reutrn the favor in a heartbeat...

I can't tell if that 7th flash is there or not either.....so, assuming it is not, here's what to check:

Seventh Flash:
Tests the "Zero Crossing Detector". This tests U10 and U14 as well as the presense of +43 volts from the rectifier board. *****If no seventh flash, check for +43 volts before changing anything else. Fuse F4 (+43 volt) is a common failure. ***** Unless U10 has already been swapped for a new or known good 6821, change it before U14.

Pull that fuse out and check it again. If the fuse is good, check the fuse holder. Do the simple stuff first - it usually works.

yep, thats the one. adam is a great guy and amazing knowledge of pinballs, when you talk to him on the phone its like hes standing next to you looking at the pin as he explains it to you. the pin was working 100% when i picked it up, i dont feel like i got ripped off at all just frustrated. i got the rom from the link someone posted earlier in this thread.

Let me take a few seconds to chime in with my .02 here. I picked up a free, non-working Firepower in January. I've spent the past 4 months working on this thing every weekend to try and get it going. I'm nearly there. Yes, pins take time to diagnose and troubleshoot, but in the end it's hugely satisfying work and you'll be much more educated b/c you fixed it yourself.

Hang in there, it's worth the wait. I just got mine working today :)

If I was you, I would not give up so easy.

You say it was working before you broke the pin on the ROM? Could you have installed the ROM backwards (hard to tell from the video)?

Could you have bent a pin under on the ROM when you installed it and it is not in the socket? Sometimes this happens, the IC looks good, and a Pin gets bent under. You could remove the ROM and re-install.

Do you have the old ROM - If so, did you try to solder a lead on to the ROM where it was missing the pin? I have purchased several ROMS from John and have never got a bad ROM, but it is something to check.

Do you have a DVM (meter)? If the new ROM is configured correctly and all pins are in the socket, you could check continuity of the pins of the chip through the socket. Maybe the socket is bad. Maybe the solder joints on the socket are bad (cracked), from removing and inserting the ROM.

Have you tried all of these things?

Kid

i beleive it is inserted correctly, havent ohmed the rom yet, have checked other roms seem inserted properly. i tried to solder it back on but was un successful. will re-check everything tomorrow, thanks for all the help.

Thanks and no I havent. I havent been messing with it, thought I would just walk away from it for a while. Been focusing on some vids lately. EDIT: after your post I called clive (i think) at coin-op-cauldron and talked to him about my board, he said about $100.00 with shipping so will ship it out this week but he also said there about 6 weeks behind on board repairs right now so hopefuly ill have good news in a couple months. Thanks to everyone for the words of encouragment I was ready to throw this thing off a roof! Stepping back from a project seems to be the best medicine.

Got some good news! my board is ready gonna pay this weekend ,heres the email i got from clive but since im new to pins its kinda like chinese.

Hi Roy.

Your Bally Heavy Metal Meltdown CPU board has now been repaired, fully tested and is 100% functional. Please note that both U2 and U3 game EPROMs (among other problems) were dead. These are being returned in a small bag with the board but are not useable as they are blown.

Work done:

Bally 6803 CPU board (Heavy Metal Meltdown): 2x 27c128 Heavy Metal Meltdown U2/U3 game EPROMs. NOS 6803 microprocessor. New 5116 Static RAM IC. Board checked A-Z for further problems. Two-tier full functional and play testing: $84.00

Shipping: $14.00

how could i be playing it and then all this went bad? or was it me trying to reseat those roms while the board was still on the machine?

WELL!! installed the board and guess what, IT STILL DOES THE SAME THING!!!! super frustrated, what in the world could it be? I was ubber careful putting the board back on when i fired it up there was no change. anyone have anymore suggestions where to go next?

You didn't respond to advice that was given earlier in this thread, why would you now?

you're far from being dead in the water.
Order a new PROM but in the mean time simply cut a leg off a capacitor, solder it to the remaining leg, cut to appropriate length and carefully insert.

+1. Broken ROM legs are easy to fix in a pinch with a little bit of wire and some solder.
