so i bought this pin, heavy metal meltdown and i dont know much about them. when i bought it everything worked fine, shortly after i got it i had to order a new coil for the right flipper (i went ahead and replaced both) everything good again. well the multiball started acting up, i checked the switch on the ramp and was good so i call the guy i got it from he suggested reseating the roms on the boards behind the back glass so i begin. WELL i broke one of the legs/pins off of one of the roms!! i dont know what to do, im really frustrated now my pin does nothing. anyone know where i can get another one? i dont know the name of it but i snap a couple photos if anyone can help that would be great.

Is that U2? If so, it's a game specific eprom. And yes, you are dead in the water until you replace it.

The ROM images are available for downloand from IPDB. But I'm guessing you don't do that stuff (me neither). So you will need to find someone who has the capability of burning ROMs and get a new set of chips (may as well get U3 while you are at it - I'm guessing you are looking at maybe $20 for the pair of chips, but don't hold me to that).

I'm sure there are dozens of folks here who have the capacity to burn a ROM for you. Hopefully one will step up. Good luck, and be careful aligning those pins when you put the new ones in!

Damn that sucks :(

My advice would be to not take any more repair advice from that person.

you're far from being dead in the water.
Order a new PROM but in the mean time simply cut a leg off a capacitor, solder it to the remaining leg, cut to appropriate length and carefully insert.

I'm interested as to why you needed a new flipper coil. The odds of a coil going bad are almost nil. Usually when you just replace a coil, whatever caused the coil to blow is still an issue. I can't think of a good reason where just and only replacing a coil will fix the issue. Maybe if it was the diode on the coil. In terms of replacing the other coil, when you're dealing with coils if it ain't broke don't fix it :)

Regarding your original problem......multi-ball issues......check the trough switches.

Great advice for somebody with experience, no doubt and a good emergency fix for the record.

Probably not going to happen in this particular case tho......

I was afraid to solder on it, I thought the heat might damage it further. And whats a trough switch? The reason I replaced the coil is it was "machine gunning" I moved it from the right to the left and the problem followed the coil, so I replaced it.

Trough switches are the switches in the...well...trough....underneath the playfield that the balls sit in before they are kicked to the shooter lane. A large % of multiball problems are caused by these switches not accuractely recognizing that a ball is resting in the trough. As a result, it will kick out a ball when it's not suppose to, or vice versa, or just shut down a game because it thinks a ball is in the trough when it's not. Not sure what your multiball issues were, but that's usually always the first place to look.

For starters, confirm that none of the switches or diodes in the trough have broken wires or are touching something they shouldn't (this area often gets banged around when the playfield is lifted up and pulled forward).

I have to say your "machine gunning" story is wierd to me, as that behavior is typically associated with an improperly gapped switch. Unless it was somehow diode related. Anyway, you fixed it. Way to go!

machine-gunning occurs when the hold-in part of the coil is not working due to broken wire or whatever. Also an improperly gapped switch would not follow th coil from side to side.Definitely a bad coil.

You are correct Burt, sorry for my bad statement.

For some reason, I had slingshot coil in my mind rather than flipper coil. And that's why it made no sense to me.

Probably thinking that way because I toasted a slingshot coil on one of my machines this week and I hope the replacement is there when I get home....

O.K. i got the u2 rom in and put it in and nothing. the playfeild lights up and the green led's (1 on each board) light up but thats it. ive checked all the fuses, all good it wont "boot" all the way up. any suggestions?

Make sure your didn't insert it backwards. Look for markings on the board. The end of the rom with the notch is typically identified on the board with a "u" shape in the outline n the board.

So im thinking I made a bad move trying to get into pinball, maybe cause I started with an older one? This thing is broke more than its working, I cant figure it out. What do yall think I could get for it not working? I paid $1000 for it a month ago fully working, just super frustrated. I have pics but im on my phone at work right now.

I'd love to have this game, stick with it and fix it. No matter what pin you get, even new ones, you are going to have to work on them...they break, wear out, etc.

Fixing them is half the fun, you just need to get more educated. Read the repair guides, read RGP, in no time at all you'll start to figure it out. We all were in your boat at one point or another...

I'm always good at dropping the bomb on people so I'll be the bad guy here.
That particular title in semi working order is worth ~$400-$600.

Sorry to say you were fairly over charged on the initial purchase. But the good news is, there's always someone just like yourself out there looking for a pin that also doesn't realize what a pain they can be ;)

I say you stick with it and ride this thing until completion. there's plenty of good folk here willing to throw ideas your way. I also fear it's the only way you'll semi recoup your loss. :(
