i need solder. i am almost out of what i have.

where is the best place to get some new:

60/40 leaded rosin core solder.

any where from 5-20 pound rolls.

i am not sure what size i need. all the stuff i have been using is old stock and has all the labels missing from the ends of the rolls.

i do mostly monitor chassis work so i don't really need really small stuff but a variety is always good.

so where do all you guys get your supply from.

cheap is always good. but i don't want stuff so cheap it wont melt rite and takes forever to do so. you ruin good parts like that.

also none of that NO LEAD STUFF that stuff is crap.

any links or places to look would be great thanks.

i do just kinda wanted an idea of different places to get it.

$39.95 for 1 pound seems like a little much.

thanks so far hope we can find a cheaper source.

Radio shack sells some by the pound: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062714 , though that's 0.062". I prefer 0.032", like: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062715 . Their "High-Tech" (silver bearing) solder is really nice, but I don't use it for stuff like cap kits, since it's overkill, and only comes in finer diameters (0.022" and 0.015").

If you don't need it right now, keep an eye out on Craigslist... if you're up near Baltimore, this is a good deal: http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/ele/2664732717.html . I have a spool of Reliacor 11, and it's the best stuff I've ever used (though mine is 0.015" silver bearing... that's standard 0.032" tin/lead, which would be perfect for what you want).

Fry's Electronics is my local stop for basic needs like solder. Not sure about availability on their website, but in-store I buy 1/2 lb spools of 0.025" 60/40 pretty cheap (I generally prefer smaller diameter solder).

i am sure their in stores are great i wish there were some in this area.

but their web site lacks on the descriptions.

says 60/40 and a ? for the poundage of the spool what kinda description is that. but the price is there.

on the other solder spools their is no pound or size description but there is a price go figure buy the mystery product i guess.

they do have alot of stuff ill give them that.

thanks for the link i may need something else from them in the future.

Your going to have a hard time finding solder cheaper than radio shack. Its very good solder and will suit your needs.

I scout Craigslist, online web sites, and the local computer/electronics flea market.

I found some used spools of hair thin solder for $1 each and about 15 new spools of solder for $5 each at the local flea market. I also picked up a box of 1/2lb spools off of the Fry's website for dirt cheap on clearance. There's a thread somewhere on the site here where I posted it up for some others to take advantage of.

I think I have about 22 to 24 pounds of solder in the drawer here. I shouldn't have to worry about running out for several years. :)
