I need a new power supply, but what should I buy?

Greetings All,

I just picked up a non-working Putting Challenge II last week. The place I got it some said they think it has an electrical problem.

Everything looks really good with regards to the electronics. The main board looks good and has three indicator LED lights on it.

When I power it up the lights come on but that is it. On the board only the middle (18v) led light comes on.

I previously posted a question about some capicitors and someone suggested the power supply is likely the issue.

Here is the power supply for the game.

So I have decided to replace to power supply.

Long story short, what should I buy?
 
Have you actually tested the voltages coming out of the power supply?

It would make sense to verify that the PS is bad before you spend the money to replace it.

A simple multimeter would be sufficient to see what kind of output is there.
 
The board with the three LEDs is part of the PSU (as well as possibly being the audio logic and amplifier board by the look of it) the power supply you mention is just the transformer pair, one isolation and one to give the outputs. It's AC outputs go to the 3 LED board for rectification and regulation. You will struggle to buy a drop in replacement as the standard PSU functions are not in a separate unit you can replace. You do need to check the transformer outputs but the fault is likely to be on that board assuming the transformer outputs are correctly connected.

It appears that U5 and U6 have been replaced on that board at one time... I would look at those first as they look funky in the picture.

Could be just lots of rosin on there, but double check them.

I will grab the meter and check the transformer to make sure.

Well thats it. Any obvious issues stick out? I am wondering if some of the points with the rust color could be bad.

I'll take a crack at it. Looks like the AC voltage inputs at P8 so check for AC voltage. Looks like the top 2 pins, one side goes though F1 and the bottom 2 pins, one side goes though F2. Check to see if either fuse is blown. If their Ok and AC voltage is present move to DB1 and DB2. These look like your bridge rectifiers. Looks like the AC for DB1 is supplied by the top 2 pins and F1. Follow the 2 traces to DB1 which are the 2 AC inputs. The other 2 pins on DB1 will be the rectified DC voltage out. If no DC voltage then Rectifier bridge is bad, if good follow traces to the voltage regulator on board. VR1 looks like a LM317 which is a variable voltage regulator 1.2 to 37 volts so maybe that's being used for the 12 volts, just a guess because VR2 is a 7805 which is a 5 volt regulator. This is all a guess from just looking at the pictures. You know you don't have 12 volts or 5 volts because the led's are not lit and you have 2 fuses, 2 bridge rectifiers and 2 voltage regulators so start with the AC in and trace your way back to the LED's on the board. Of course that's if you have basic trouble shooting skills and know how to use a volt meter.
