I may buy this tomorrow, need advice.

My impression is there were a lot of conversion purpose built cabinets made in the 90's to fit fighters. Yours might be one of those. You may never figure out what it was originally. I had an SFII in a small woodgrained cabinet and wondered for years what it was. Saw a seller selling of a bunch of converted games with the same cabinet, so I just concluded it was a purpose built cab for conversions.

Bad Dudes was 19", not 25". Not sure if you can fit a 25" in the same cab, but then again, the marquee area doesn't matchup.

Data East made a dedicated Bad Dudes, Robocop, and Cobra Command with 25" monitors. Ops had the choice of the 2 cabinets dedicated (19" with round marquee or 25"), or conversion kit.

This was a dedicated 25" Bad Dudes in a previous life.

Bad Dudes came in a 25" cab?

Are you positive that Bad Dudes only came in 19" It would seem to me that my cabinet might disprove that theory. First the cabinet is covered in the same gray vinyl (with bare wood underneath) as the Bad Dudes in KLOV, and in the photo below you can see the circular mark were the Data East Logo was:

And in this photo you can see the Bad Dudes control panel overlay, which while not picutred extends the whole width of the 25" cabinet's control panel. This makes me think that this was orginaly a 25" Bad Dudes.

Now I know that the marquee is not curved, but that could have been modified in the conversion, or the if a 25" BD existed it might have not had a curved marquee.

Does anyone know for sure? Should I make a new thread?

LOL I guess that answers my question!

Now the question is should I keep as a MK, or convert it back to a Bad Dudes? The gray vinyl is ugly, and while I love Bad Dudes, it isn't as much fun as Mortal Kombat.

Maybe I should just collect the parts to convert it back, so I can if I want in the future.

I would need a Control Panel and overlay, marquee, board, and side art.

my original guess was that it was a data east cab.. i have a bad dudes pcb if you want it..$25 plus shipping..

You'll have a tough time finding an unmolested 25" cab bad dudes control panel.

Keep it a MK and sell it when you find a better one.

my thoughts

It looks to me like an odd Dynamo Cab

http://www.arcadeflyers.com/?page=flyer&db=videodb&id=4831&image=1

It's almost like an HS-4 BIG BOY.

It's not because of the top. It could be a later dynamo or a copy of one.

It's a generic JAMMA cab that was converted to various things including a MK. It's fine and isn't as "BAD" as something that was obvioulsy something else converted to a MK which did come in kits...

Don't feel too bad about it.

Bad Dudes is cheap, by the time you buy parts for it you could buy a whole game (maybe not a 25", but at least a respectible 19" Data East cab). My vote is for a red paint job and leave it MK for now. If you find a dedicated MK later, that red cabinet would make a decent looking Neo Geo conversion.

You are probaly right, I could have some metal welded in an sanded smooth, then I would only need the overlay. I don't think I will be completely satified with that cab for MK. So I am leaning toward converting it back at some point.

I don't think it looks like that cabinet, and I am positive it wasn't a generic cabinet.

I can't bring myself to further convert a cabinet, it goes against my being. So it will stay an ugly MK 1 and maybe be converted back some day. I wouldn't MVS it since I already have one. :)

IMO very Nice! for me people who come to my house and play my games could care less if its a conversion or not, they like to just play them.

Thanks. I have friends who are big into the fighting games, and the CP is pretty tight, especially in contrast to the Marvel VS Capcom sitting right next to it! Nothing beats the luxury of a BIG contro panel, Mind you not like thse massive MAME MONSTROSITIES!

I'd never seen a 25" dedicated Bad Dudes, but it obviously means one didn't exist. Interesting find. But yeah, not sure what I'd do with it being that the CP is small. If you can rotate the monitor to vertical you have more options. MK's original dedicated cab is cooler than any conversion, too, and this one is no exception.

I would leave it as an MK conversion and enjoy it until I found a dedicated cab. I wouldn't convert this back to Bad Dudes. Bad Dudes is a cool game and all but it doesn't have the appeal of MK or Street Fighter. If you find a dedicated cab just sell this one as is. All the work has been done for you afterall.

Sell a cabinet? interesting idea... :D

tighe, I will glady take that off your hands, im dying for an mk. thats a decent enough conversion, not like the freaking galaga cabinets that are mk's haha

LOL My game collection exists because I hadn't sold a game ever until about two months ago (to finance the MVS multi cart I got).

It is pretty hard for me to part with games, but I am working on it. I am not anywhere ready to sell this MK, but if I find a dedicated in good condition and I have the money to buy it, I will let you know :)

I just recorded this video last night to enter a competition on bitgamer.com

My basement isn't very pretty, I would love to get that Owens Corning finishing system and stain and coat the floors! Anyone used the quickrete concrete stain and sealer?

That's funny, my collection exists because I've sold games to finance it. :D Well my arcade collection anyway.

I'm awed at how you were able to hold on to all of your console stuff. I wish I had all my old consoles and games back. I've bought back quite a few of the games I had fond memories of. Unfortunately it was at a higher price than I got when I sold them. :(

It is all good until you end up on that show Hoarders :p
