Not only am I learning a TON of stuff about electronics, which I definitely would not have taught myself otherwise, but I'm getting to use that in other areas.

I just fixed my broken AC unit by applying myself and using:
a. My naturally logical though process.
b. Trouble shooting learned through many different jobs, school, HERE, etc. but most importantly to THIS forum...
c. My newly found interest in electronics, vis-a-vis the KLOV forums and renewing my passion for arcade games.

Without my interest in this hobby, I never would have thought to rip into my AC furnace and find out that a simple little thermistor in my blower motors ECM module had burned out. 10 bucks shipped from Mouser, and I have a working AC/furnace again. Otherwise this may have cost 800-1200 bucks. Simply amazing!

/toast!

That's cool. I am the same way. I got my wife a car and the AC/Heater blower motor wasn't working. $50 in parts and an hours time and I got it fixed. My first car repair. Normally I am quite car retarded so I was very proud of this accomplishment.

Yeah, since getting into this hobby just over 3.5 years ago, not only have I learned to fix pins and vids, but also my microwave and vacuum. Pretty sweet!

repairs

i can in-frame a cat 3406e or c-15 engine, do multiplex wiring repairs on esc's, electronic diagnosis and repairs on trucks and cars. but for some reason i want to puke when looking in a cab. but little by little i am starting to stick my hands in there, gonna have to learn if i am gonna collect 30 year old arcade games!

Learning how to fix tvs, vacuum cleaners and air conditioners via my game hobby is what got me my last job. Heck, the poor hotel I worked at is still running crt sets (even though the chain is giving them big inspection penalty points for doing so), because I repaired roughly 100 of their 120 sets in the last 4 years. Of course that same poor hotel only passed their last chain inspection because I went to high school with the inspector. I hope the next inspector shuts them down (the most recent new management let me go on the first day).

I fixed a friend's power supply on his computer. A film capacitor started smoking, swapped it out with another from a lower rated power supply. A month later, the power supply is still working. Woohoo, that's about all I got.

so far rookie me has learned bout wires and switches. I was already good at troubleshooting from being a PC teach and I can apply that to what I happen to be doing.

Agreed...

Several really awesome aspects to this hobby:

1. learning & working hands-on with electronics
2. learning & working hands-on with restorations
3. meeting some cool (and some creepy!) people
4. re-living your childhood
