The legal definition states that a real slot machine has a pull handle and pays out actual coins.

The "Pachislo" Japanese machines are 'slot-like' and are not originally supplied with handles. They pay out in tokens, but can be converted to quarters which then may make the machine illegal in your particular jurisdiction.

The machines in the Indian casinos here in Washington state are not real slot machines. They use a pushbutton to start the 'reels' (actually an image of reels on a video monitor) spinning. They have no form of coin or bill acceptor on them and they do not 'pay out' any currency. These machines have a card reader and operate on the "credits" principle. You play for credits that are written to the card by the machine. No fun at all.

I have an old mills slot machine(nickel) and another that is a counter top that has a bunch of metal doors that close to hide the reels and coin slot. That one used ot be in a bar when slots were outlawed. If a copper came in they would flip all the doors over and it didnt look like a slot...My father used to fix up old slot machines and used to have over 50...of the old skool real slots.

I can only imagine what some of those would be worth today. I'm guessing he sold them all and funded your college eduation?

Eh. I only got those two. He sold the rest and bought most of his cartoon art collection (which I have tons of) but a majority was donated to ohio state university ( when he kicked the bucket)as they have an awsome cartoon preserve.

It was cool to watch him fix them up. He would basically dismantle everything, clean all parts in some nasty chemical. then put everything back, fix all the mechanical parts, then touch up any flaws on the front. Learned a bit about the insides of slots so it was coo

Wow that's cool. What type of cartoon art? More specifically what style or genre? I wish my father did something exciting. He basically worked a back breaking blue collar job all his life. The only thing exciting to see at his work that was coin operated was the Coke machine. He didn't collect a single thing except his paycheck and property.

I just picked up a Pachislo at the last auction for $40... it's in nice shape, and I guess it's kinda fun, but I can tell it's just gonna sit around taking up space

HE collected everything cartoon related. He had the worlds largest collection of Original Mad magazine artwork, Only collection of self caricatures of cartoonists, then a Nude self caricature of cartoonists. Basically, cartoonists would draw themselves naked with a lot of humor surrounding it. For instance Charles Schulz was naked, laying on top of snoopys dog house (just like snoopy did) The cartoons he collected were from comic books, cartoons, newspaper, etc. His collection has been all over the world including the Smithsonian. My Child hood sucked. I grew up with all the old skool cartoonists. I have books autographed by almost all of em. Dr. Seuss, Maurice sendak, etc. I have taken tours and watched newspaper plants make the funnies with bill Griffith (zippy). I've been to the mad office in NY and met Bill Gaines (ol'man actually inherited all his boxer shorts when he died). Lunch with Robert crumb. The list is huge and could spend all day talkin about it. But this is a slot forum.....Now you know where my addiction on collecting came from

I was in 2 casino's before and each time I lost my ass. I was in the casino in Charles Town, WV. and the ones in Atlantic City. The ones at Charlestown Town, WV were funner because I could actually hit every now and again on those but the ones at Atlantic City just ate my money right out of my pocket. Now take it for granite, I was only 19 when I went to Charles Town, and 21 when I went to AC.. but I should have known better. I had all but 50 dollars in quarters saved up for when I went to AC.. and I know I lost them in a matter of 20 minutes. It was no fun at all.. the bus ride down was the only amusement. I was the youngest on the bus and I won some for lottery tickets that was the only thing I won on all day. If it wouldnt have been rainy and raw.. I probably would have spent all my money on the boardwalk at the go-kart tracks and in the arcades. My neighbor is a gambling freak and is always telling me I need to buy a slot machine to put in the basement (she said she would be down every night trying to make it pay out the jackpot)but to get a slot machine in PA you can only have tokens. And those things are expensive for real ones from casino's. The PA GameRoomWarehouse wants like 1000 bucks for one. (shakes head in disbelief). The only machine I would buy because I like the looks of and would hope it would make me some money would be a Double Diamonds. Those things were my fav's when I was in the real casino's and I would love to have one of my own.

Almost everything is illegal in CA... Unless it's something like 25 years old or something...

I really want a "Catch a Wave" video slot though... I won like $2k off one at Thunder Valley Indian Casino by Sac a couple years ago... paid off my wife's car then crashed it 2 weeks later! ARG!
