I like the new forum

We are now on system #5. Each time some people had a hard time with upgrades. Each time it was a definite improvement, but something I put off as long as possible. It's like different versions of Windows:

#1. KLOV Forums, Original Perl Scripts = Windows 1.0
#2. KLOV Forums, Gossamer Threads = Windows 2.0
#3. KLOV Forums, UbbThreads = Windows 3.1
#4. KLOV Forums, vBulletin (1999-2020) = Windows XP
#5. KLOV 2020 Forums = Windows 10

So maybe new isn't as classic or charming, but it works a whole lot better and actually gets security updates.

1. the emoji thing is a pretty simple fix. just a little time consuming translating them over to XF emojis.

2. try the transition B theme. highlighting works perfect until that is sorted on the main theme.

3. the quick reply frame is exactly the way it is in the original XF theme.

4. They plan on adding proper tagging. I do believe there was an issue importing old tags properly or something to that effect.

5. Karma is replaced by the trophy system. I wrote up a quick FAQ about some new facets of the forums.

Thanks. Again, they had better sort the issue of importing old tags, people aren't gonna like that.
Also, Karma -> Trophy doesn't seem to be an exact match. You could give people Karma. How do you give people trophies? [EDIT] Oh I see, post Likes? That's... ewww... alright. You could probably satisfy a lot of old farts by just replacing the word "Like" with "Give Karma" and "Trophy" with "Karma" or something, LOL.

The "Conversations" import seems to have not gone all that well, incidentally. None of my private messages back and forth which kept the same participants and subject have been conjoined into the same thread. At least I am glad to have them at all...

As for mameworld, I do believe there's a ubbthreads to vbulletin 3 importer. considering the age of both, they may have to import to there, check the integrity of the data and then import from Vbulletin 3 to another forum software. That's gonna be an interesting import.

Yes, and I have already been threatened that if the software is completely replaced with either a new version of itself or a different product, that it had better look and act EXACTLY like the original - or else. So let's just say that I have some design constraints. :p Incidentally I did find out that UBB.threads still produces new versions from time to time and there's a torturous workflow you could do to get back to latest. They charge for access to updates and support tho just like Xenforo, and there's probably some budget limitations, so if MAMEWorld had to switch to something I would rather it switch to something free and open source, maybe phpBB as I have a lot of experience managing those now. Anyhow that's all more than a bit off-topic and may never happen as I am not that great a web developer anyways :p

As reported, the tag system has issues that will take time to fix. However, I just turned on viewing of them. They are appearing at the top of thread pages though, instead of at the bottom. I liked them at the bottom better...

The trophy system is just what's built-in here.

It's been years since I've messed around with UBB and phpBB- Probably the last time i tinkered with phpBB was about 2008.

Currently KLOV is just using the DEFAULT trophy settings for all users, the system can be majorly tweaked, but again - that takes time & effort... Maybe something to add to McLemore's ongoing list!

This is what the default user Trophy list looks like in the Admin settings:

On the same note, this new KLOV forum (XenForo) utilizes a "user title ladder", as such:

But again, I'm quite sure this is tweaked and/or will be tweaked in the near future...

yes. I mention this in My FAQ Post. :)

FWIW, I'd really like to see a rep system that incentivizes positive and helpful posting.

Other forums I've been on would display a user's rep score below their name. It was a useful indicator, and it helped you know who the vets and contributors were in the community. (And it motivated people to increase their scores through positive actions.)

reppin' Ubb gang!
