I like the new forum

I am fucking blind. :p There was a notification on where it was in the announcements section AND it's the top selection in Preferences!

Back to dark greys. So much better. :)
Much MUCH better (and needed). Quick question: are color "style" options coming? (Light mode, Dark mode). On the old forum I set mine to dark because my eyes get tired staring at white on a screen all day. :)

Avatars -- The system was defaulting to putting a large text initial in a circle if one didn't have an avatar. I changed it to blank. Looking better?

I'm kind of curious about this, as so far this new layout seems alright on a 5:4 monitor (which I use at home and a work) did this scaling issue affect vbulletin across the board or just Windows? I'd have to try to utilize a widescreen monitor, but it at least seems more user friendly than when I was using the old (and new) style on a phone.

When I was talking about scaling the site... I wasn't talking about how it fit on the screen, but rather, how the servers handled increasing traffic demands.

>>edit the similar threads at the bottom seems more pronounced now and not very relevant. Would be nice if that was collapsed and you could expand it if you really wanted to see similar threads.

Also the amount of info in our avatars/profile info is creating lots of blank space in short posts.

It's due mostly to the responsive frameworks. They established a look and feel to support a wide range of devices, screen resolution, and display dpis, and as is often the case with website fashion, everyone else subsequently followed suit...

We can weigh search results. I keep switching it back and forth between focusing on most recent vs relevance and either way it isn't perfect. It sounds like it will be a longer term goal to get it optimized. In the meantime, I temporarily changed it from 5 results at the bottom to 3.

As far as white space, when I get more time, I'll probably look at what we can do to reorganize a bit. It's tricky though since the same work for desktop and mobile.

Hey! Chiming in from MAMEdev-land and I gotta say that I love what you've done with the place already. ❤

I also help moderate https://www.vogons.org (VOGONS forums) and about six months ago we went through a transition from a rather old version of phpBB we last updated about 5-7 years ago to a much newer phpBB with a heavily modded skin or two and many new features. There was some mild user rebellion there too, but in the end the people who don't like the change will simply leave. Hopefully there's enough workarounds to stop that loss tho. In the end the folks at VOGONS have received many compliments as well. It's the same every time you make a big change. Usually eventually the veterans will forget what the old version looked and felt like. You'll be surprised how good you can make it if you stay on top of user feedback for a few months in threads like this. I sorta have a standing offer to help modernize the once popular MAMEWorld Forums, which aren't technically the official MAMEdev forums but are instead just a long-lasting part of the community, but MAMEWorld is on some ancient version of UBB.threads and I can just tell that the whole migration will be terrible.

Viewing vBulletin Transition A (Square Avatars) theme at approximately 80% in Chrome on my old HP W2072a LCD Monitor set to 1600x900 looks freaking great. I prefer it to the other vBulletin skin already. I will try to give the other skins a chance tho. You may be able to gather some stats on which is more popular months after you've made this transition

Let's see... actual feedback:
1. The broken emojis are rather glaring and leap out at me as I try to parse their text. For example, I just saw an older post where someone made a reply and ended it with "". I KNOW that would have been a little emoji/emoticon. How we worked around this at VOGONS was that we were still on the stock emoji/emoticon set from phpBB, no custom mods or collections, so the forum admin who handled the software upgrade was able to map the old ones to the new ones and handle it...

2. I am currently writing this post in the "Quick Reply" section at the end of the thread, and I thought to maybe highlight a phrase and cut and paste it elsewhere. However, the editor frame did not show the highlighting or color inversion of the highlighted words or anything. Perhaps this is what you mean by a "contrast issue"? (I just noticed this was clearly asked and answered in another thread.)

3. I'm also a little surprised that the frame to the left of the "Quick Reply" shows my avatar but not my username and the rest of my profile information. I guess I get why tho,

4. You're probably gonna catch a lot of flack if thread tags don't return with people both able to create new tags AND see all the old ones. That feature was much loved and used (and abused). I noticed that you did say that it will return later, but I did not find that statement to clearly say that the old tags will be returning and reapplied.

5. Another thing which must return is the karma points system, if possible. I haven't discovered where that is hiding yet. That feature has been a forum cultural touchstone for several years now. It would be difficult to read that thread where people give out points again.

Thanks for all the work to update the software.
I like the "similar thread" list at the bottom. Makes looking for an answer much simpler.

i "don't like it" insomuch that it's not identical but, it's not that different

give it a couple weeks :)

1. the emoji thing is a pretty simple fix. just a little time consuming translating them over to XF emojis.

2. try the transition B theme. highlighting works perfect until that is sorted on the main theme.

3. the quick reply frame is exactly the way it is in the original XF theme.

4. They plan on adding proper tagging. I do believe there was an issue importing old tags properly or something to that effect.

5. Karma is replaced by the trophy system. I wrote up a quick FAQ about some new facets of the forums.

As for mameworld, I do believe there's a ubbthreads to vbulletin 3 importer. considering the age of both, they may have to import to there, check the integrity of the data and then import from Vbulletin 3 to another forum software. That's gonna be an interesting import.

The transitional B theme i made looks closer to the original but you need to keep in mind, it was made strictly as a transitional theme. It was not meant to be a 1:1 clone.

So... I just added push notifications. A user will be able to subscribe to receive their alerts via devices which are compatible with the Push API. Users will only be able to enable push notifications if they are using a compatible device. This is supported by most major browsers except Safari on macOS and any browser on iOS.

To active, click on your name at the top right of the page, then select 'Preferences', and then select 'Enable push notifications'.
Odd, I don't see it in my preferences. And yes, I'm using a compatible browser (Chrome on Windows 10).

I dont need a couple weeks, the boxes for text are too big and i need to scroll for a mile to get at the bottom of the post.

the only thing that this does for me will be to come less often or not at all.

Hard to read. It's kinda harsh on the eyes. And yes, I've already tried all of the current themes. Also, users' locations don't appear under their avatar and username anymore, which is gonna be a pain. Lots of little things will have to be worked out or worked around.

I'm sure the back-end is light years better and that's awesome for the admins, but I really wanna punch UI designers in the nuts sometimes.

How do you adjust the themes?, I must be blind

Are the notifications by email working for everyone?

I have all my EMAIL options turned on in the profile/settings. I haven't got a single email yet. (Nothing in the spam folder either)

I have not either.

Well, I can already tell that the new forum layout is helping out the Bronze Age sub-forum immensely! I no longer have to set the thread count to "From All Time" setting every time I go in there to see all the threads in it. That appears to be done automatically and all the threads are there instantly. That is a good thing!

Really hate that the post tags are gone, makes browsing the sale forums a lot more of a pain in the ass since you can't quickly tell if something has been sold or not.
