Recently I've become addicted to Gravitar, and I must say that I don't remember playing it in the arcade ever. When I started playing it a few weeks ago, I thought it was an impossible game because it was so hard to control.. almost to the point of not wanting to play it anymore. I could totally understand why this game didn't do well in the arcades to those pumping quarters in the game... BUT..

Being the type that would not let any video game defeat me, I took the time to learn how to carefully control the ship, and now that I have, I am TOTALLY addicted to this game! I am now sometimes clearing multiple levels with one ship and have a feel for the game, and can't stop playing! My hands are starting to get the arcade game strain since I've been playing it so much :) What a great game indeed.

So to those who try it and don't like it, give it some time.. it's a really fun game and the challenge of it makes it even better to me. Initial patience is paramount.

Any other Gravitar players out there? Any haters?

Any pointers from long time gravitar players to help me out? IE when to go for the fuel, when not to, etc...

Gravitar is awesome, I agree.

Here is a story:
I picked one up, but having played a few times and sucking in the past, I had immediate plans to convert it to Black Widow. Well, I started playing it and I am hooked. I have a full BW kit, PCB, CP, and marquee as well now, and I have not even put it in the cabinet to try it! I will have to find another cab to play BW, because Gravitar is going nowhere.

I had the opportunity to watch a great Gravitar player (Dwayne Richards) a couple weeks ago. He was pretty stoked, having not played the game in quite some time. A few things I noticed: He never played the red planets, and he pretty much picked up all fuel possible. Ship control was amazing. There are lots of places where shields were vital. If you don't use shields yet, learn them, you will have to later. Each universe has 3 solar systems.

You're not crazy. Gravitar kicks ass. It's one of the four games currently on my want list.

Man, I am really missing this game! Ahh... the good old days in the GAYRAGE:

Seems like 10 years ago. :)

I think I could get to like it a lot more if I owned one.......:p

Played it some, it's a vector so I'm already sucked in, it's tough and challenging but it's more fun to me than Major Havok....

I really want a gravitar. It's on my top ten list.

Anyone that likes gravitar and has an atari 2600 laying around. They should check out a homebrew game called Thrust. It is similar in strategy, and just about as tough. I am kind of biased since I am one of the few that have beaten it, and I have sunk quite a few hours into it.

Definitely not crazy... it's one of my favorite games (and I'm so glad I finally found one last year). I can't say I've very good at it, but I don't think it's ridiculously difficult (I probably play it about as long as most games). I never played it in the arcades, but I've always been a fan of gravity games, and this has gotta be one of the best of it's type.

Love the game its one of the last atari vectors I need to complete the set, and its #1 on my want list!!

Great game. Like Defender, there is a crazy initial difficulty hurdle to overcome before the game becomes rewarding. Honestly, it kicked my ass pretty good in the arcade but being OK at Asteroids helped.

When you're at the mall and have 3 bucks to get you through the whole night, you have to choose your battles carefully!

Alright! There are some other Gravitar fans out there! It is actually my second favorite game, close behind Major Havoc.

Gravitar is an amazing game, and I hope to own one someday. First off, the cabinet artwork is super-cool. The gameplay also has so many levels and ways to beat them that it never gets old. This is a game where taking a second to blink or sneeze can make you lose a life. Man, I love Gravitar. This game is like a crazy color hybrid between asteroids and lunar lander.

What are everyone's high scores? I have managed to get about 80,000 points, but that was almost a year ago.

What I like about Gravitar is that it isn't too fast and frenzied like many other games. It takes finesse and skill to play.

My high score is 4,722,220, but I haven't scored that high in a while.

Dan Coogan has an awesome website on Gravitar with tips and tricks, as well as a nice narrative about how he beat my high score. Check it out:

I played it at CAX for the first time this year. I liked it! Wouldnt mind adding one to my basement arcade.

I played it quite a bit at CAX this year and really enjoyed it! Hard, but addictive.

I have honestly never played the Gravitar that I own. (PCB problems, and it's off in storage due to a lack of space in my house)

3rd solar system club

I just made it to the 3rd solar system for the first time TODAY! WHOOT! I'm in the 3rd solar system club now! I had to take a look at all the planets before I died, that southern planet is very cool looking. The most beautiful, graceful gameplay ever IMO. A very cerebral game and I always think strategy on this one before I play. The complete opposite of Black Widow.

Never had a Gravitar but I have played it a few times. Hard as hell but hard to walk away from, just like Black Widow.
