I KNOW you're the wrong group of folks to ask, but...

You are going to need a closet in both the office and the arcade to
make sure they are considered bedrooms by a future buyer.

I would get rid of the tiny hall closet, slide the arcade closet to the
left and put a pass through between the two closets joining the rooms.
Make sure the opening is a standard prehung door widith so dropping in a door down the road is a 1/2 hour job.

I would bet its not a load bearing wall but you should check in the
attic before removing structure without proper supports/headers.

...I am seriously considering converting my office into an arcade extension.

Obviously I am single.

Looking for legitimate advice, here. I know everyone's first instinct is simply "Do it! Do it!" but I already have 1 of my 3 bedrooms as an arcade, and am not sure if converting another one is the best idea. Especially since I'm considering taking out a closet between the two to have a walkway through.
  • The pros:
  • It's my house. I'm single. It would be awesome.
  • More room for games. Blacklights. Neon carpeting. You all know these perks. :D
  • Could still have friends crash/spend the night with an inflatable mattress or whatnot.
  • Could possibly combine with my "office" stuff in the same room, and just get room dividers or something if/when I throw arcade parties.
  • The cons:
  • Would this hinder a home sale if/when I ever move? Having 2 rooms adjoined? Or no biggie?
  • More money I don't have... For mirrors, games, lights...
Am I being stupid for even considering doing this? 2/3 of the bedrooms in my house as gamerooms?

Here's a quick top-view drawing of my house I made. (Roughly to scale, but didn't finish measuring the kitchen/laundry room) One of the 2 closets between the rooms would get axed for the walkway if I did this.

Whaddya think?

If you think that you will ever move at any point in your life I would not do this.

And the money thing is definitely a deterrent. You don't want to spend all this money you don't have and be eating pork and beans everyday for several months.

Personally, I think the obvious answer is to move your bed into the arcade, then hang a 32" door in the back of the master bedroom closet, and make the master bedroom/office one huge arcade half the size of your house. That's just me talkin' though.

God, I love that picture. Thanks, gutsman! :D

Bump for the daywalking audience...

Why don't you just hit the easy button and have 2 separate arcade rooms? That way you can do two seperate arcade themes like Phet has... er, had, have the benefit of more games/arcade space and be able to leave the house alone for the next owner.

Move the arcade into the master room, move yourself into one of the other rooms.

My in-laws just did the same thing (not for games though) it went from a 3 bedroom to a 2 bedroom and look's fantastic. The 2 bedrooms were fairly small so it made it kinda like a suite room and in my opinion raised the value of the house. My father inlaw is a cabinet builder/carpenter by trade so it only cost him the price of the materials. I think its a great idea.

That's where my head is right now... Having the connecting passageway would be cool, but not necessary, I guess...

Whatever the outcome, I 'spose there'd be no harm in ordering another 8x11 neon arcade rug, riiiight?

You can always bust out the sledge at 2:00 a.m. some morning after an all night bender and knock that wall out, right? :)
