I KNOW you're the wrong group of folks to ask, but...

...I am seriously considering converting my office into an arcade extension.

Obviously I am single.

Looking for legitimate advice, here. I know everyone's first instinct is simply "Do it! Do it!" but I already have 1 of my 3 bedrooms as an arcade, and am not sure if converting another one is the best idea. Especially since I'm considering taking out a closet between the two to have a walkway through.
  • The pros:
  • It's my house. I'm single. It would be awesome.
  • More room for games. Blacklights. Neon carpeting. You all know these perks. :D
  • Could still have friends crash/spend the night with an inflatable mattress or whatnot.
  • Could possibly combine with my "office" stuff in the same room, and just get room dividers or something if/when I throw arcade parties.
  • The cons:
  • Would this hinder a home sale if/when I ever move? Having 2 rooms adjoined? Or no biggie?
  • More money I don't have... For mirrors, games, lights...
Am I being stupid for even considering doing this? 2/3 of the bedrooms in my house as gamerooms?

Here's a quick top-view drawing of my house I made. (Roughly to scale, but didn't finish measuring the kitchen/laundry room) One of the 2 closets between the rooms would get axed for the walkway if I did this.

A two bedroom house always sells for less than a three bedroom. Also, if you plan on eliminating both closets then the large room can't be called a bedroom and now you have a really big one bedroom house with two family rooms - a very odd floor design.

I say leave the place alone, or build an addition to the end of the house with the master/office.

Mabye try to add a bathroom so that when you move you could sell it as 2bdrm with a "master suite" bed and bath all combined?

I would have to agree... thats a sure fire way to make sure you won't be contributing to the gene pool. ;)

Well, if/when I moved out, the arcade rooms would be emptied / back to bedrooms... There'd just be a walkway between.

But so far, yours is the first realistic reply, and I thank you for that. :D

Chivas is pure evil, Chris.

i would open up the wall between the rooms. not take the wall out but make a wide opening. you could always close it up before you tried to sell the house. if you can take it down you can put it back up right?

if i could get away with it, i would.

I wish i sitll had my first house. It was 1 bedroom, laundry and bathroom togther with one of those double stafked laundry machines, rough plaster walls, black kammode and sink, small kitchen, and BIG FRICKIN HOTTUB IN THE HOUSE it was the schicnit. Oh i also had a star trek like door going to the bedroom.. and a 4 car garage. It also has no grass, it was either blackttop or concrete all around the house backyard and all.

I'll probably be single forever anyway...

But yeah, everyone knows it would be neat/cool, I just don't want to make a bonehead mistake if it's not in my best interest.

Women usually want to move into a new house, anyway...

if your good with a hammer nails 2by4 and dry wood. Joining two rooms and separating them after you move shouldn't be to costly. Saving the closet doors and the trim for the reinstall later would save you some bucks also.

so why not just ditch a closet. make a door to makes the rooms adjoin. SOmething that can be rewalled without reworking the whole thing. mabye just an arch or door opening, that could be reframed and drywalled later easily.

I am, but have never done that type of work... Which I can certainly learn. And/or pay a handyman to do it... :confused2:

It's brick/plaster. Does that matter?

hell yeah!! i tried going to my old website but its dead.. i did have pics to prove it.

It was great. $400 a month mortgage, that included homeowners and taxes.

if i still had that place, id just make the entire living room and bedroom my arcade lol

Super simple stuff man. Home depot has tons of books and stuff but its not hard at all to just put a doorway through one of the closets and then re drywall later if needed. weekend project at most.

no that was straight. THe garage was only like 5 years old at the time i bought the place(house was built in like 1930 and been modernized severa times over the years). It was built to hold two flatbed towtrucks so a little big wider than a 2.5 car garage, but it was super long( thats what she said)
